Local residents are being asked to come forward with information after what's believed to be an arson attack seriously damaged play equipment at one of Chesterfield's country parks.

The attack took place on the evening of Thursday 7th February, or in the early hours of Friday 8th February at Poolsbrook Country Park, off Inkersall Road, Poolsbrook.

Play equipment on the park's play area (pictured above) was set alight causing an estimated £1,000 worth of damage.

The play area remains closed to visitors until the necessary repair work can be carried out. The rest of the park remains open to visitors.

Councillor Chris Ludlow, Chesterfield Borough Council's Executive Member for Environment said: I am deeply shocked that someone could set fire to this much loved and well-used used state of the art play equipment at one of our popular parks.Councillor Chris Ludlow, Chesterfield Borough Council's Executive Member for Environment (pictured left) said: "I am deeply shocked that someone could set fire to this much loved and well-used used state of the art play equipment at one of our popular parks.

"I would encourage anyone who knows anything about this attack to report it to the police or Crimestoppers immediately."

Poolsbrook Country Park was developed by Chesterfield Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council on the site of the former Ireland Colliery.

The play equipment which has been damaged was installed in 2011 at a cost of £77,000 - with funding from the Big Lottery Play Initiative, Viridor and Chesterfield Borough Council.

Anyone with information about the fire should call Derbyshire Police's non-emergency number 101, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
