Tuesday 26th October 2010 One of Chesterfield’s twin towns is asking residents for information on the family of a WW2 airman who was shot down in Germany.
Sgt. Dennis Heeley was the son of Fred and Loie May Heeley of Brimington in Chesterfield and was killed in action when his plane crashed in Salzbergen in Germany on March 6th, 1945.
A memorial to Dennis is being unveiled in November at the site where the plane crashed.
The organisers of the ceremony are hoping that any relatives or descendants of Dennis's family can be contacted before the unveiling takes place.
Dennis, who was a member of the Voluntary Reserve, belonged to the 514th Squadron of the RAF, No 3 group and flew in an Avro Lancaster MK III from Waterbeach in Cambridgeshire.
Anyone with any information on Dennis's family should contact Mary Stead, Chesterfield Borough Council, Tel: 01246 345236 or Email: mary.stead@chesterfield.gov.uk
