Four Simple Gardening Mistakes And How To Avoid Them

Tuesday 13th April 2021

As we inch our way slowly towards summertime, those of us who are lucky enough to have a home with some green space are getting back out there and getting stuck into some gardening.

If you have decided that the time has come for you to start you first gardening project, you may be feeling a few nerves about how to get started.

It can be a little intimidating when you’re committing to trying to grow something for the very first time, and there are a few classic mistakes that a lot of first timers make.

Here are a few of the most common missteps and how you can avoid them.

Over-Watering Your Plants

Different plants will require different amounts of water if they’re going to grow healthily, but one of the most important things to remember if you’re planting for the very first time is that overwatering is just as bad as underwatering.

It’s also important to think carefully about the time of day when you water your plants. If you water them when it’s very hot, the moisture will evaporate, so think about doing it first thing in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler.

Picking The Wrong Place To Plant

One of the most important things to consider when you’re looking at where to plant is the amount of sunlight the space gets.

They’re going to need at least six hours of sunlight a day, but it’s not just about light.

It can be easy to get over-excited and overstuff your growing area but remember that anything growing in that space will get exponentially bigger and if you make these plants fight for space, you are going to end up with a disappointing yield.

Forgetting About Predators And Pests

You may have chosen a nice, sheltered spot for your new vegetable garden, but even if you’re confident that you won’t get too many hungry birds stopping in for a visit, you need to remember that there are plenty of tiny insects who would like nothing better than to turn your plants into a salad bar.

Try to resist taking a chemical approach with a pesticide that could do as much harm to your plants as hungry aphids will, and think instead about investing in some good garden netting. Netting can keep everything from rabbits to cabbage root fly off your plants and allow them to grow in peace.

Choosing The Wrong Soil Or Fertiliser

You will need to remember that every plant comes with their own unique set of requirements.

While you may have a nice patch of earth in your back garden, the soil may not be the right fit for the seeds you have in mind. It’s also important to note that choosing the wrong fertiliser can have a devastating impact on your crops.

Before you get planting, make sure that you do as much research as possible into your chosen crop’s specific needs to avoid any early mistakes. The weather may be as unpredictable as ever this summer, but with the right soil and fertiliser, you can make sure that they are ready for whatever’s coming.
