Sustainable Garden Ideas You Should Consider For Your Outdoor Space

Thursday 7th July 2022

Creating an eco-friendly garden area is a common goal among gardeners today. Long gone are the days of pristine, isometric, and sometimes even brutalist garden designs.

Of course, you can still glimpse marvellous works of art meticulously sculpted at gardening shows; however, many people today would prefer to create something with a much more natural and sustainable vibe.

To help you create something like this, we’ve listed a few simple sustainability tips for your garden project.

Make Use Of Companion Planting

The first piece of advice we would like to give is to use what is known as companion planting.

This is perfect if you’re growing crops of some kind and will reduce your need to use pesticides, which can be bad for the environment.

Companion planting is essentially where you grow plants alongside your main crops, which will attract pests to them and away from your more valuable plants. This method is much more complex than you might think and will require a number of steps to get right.

You’ll need to choose the correct companion plants as certain species will only attract certain pests, and others can be used to deter pests from your crops.

For example, when planting carrots, it’s recommended to grow spring onions among them as the smell repels carrot root flies. And for cabbage and cauliflower, plant nasturtium nearby as a sacrificial plant as this will attract butterflies to them away from your brassicas.

Use More Sustainable Materials

When purchasing things for your garden, you’ll likely come across items that use materials which may be more harmful to the environment than others.

For example, using stone and wood imported from abroad will have a large carbon footprint attached to it.

In contrast, you could instead use locally sourced materials and even recycled ones to promote a much more sustainable garden. You could also choose some alternative plastic greenhouse options which use materials that are 100% recyclable too.

The most important thing here is to be conscious of the materials and items you choose to add to your garden. While you might be using sustainable gardening practices, including using things like rainwater collectors and even solar lighting, the materials you bring into your garden may be having a significantly damaging impact elsewhere in the world.

Allow Wild Growth

One of the biggest threats to our environment is the destruction of native plant life and wild growth across the countryside.

To help do our part in remedying this damage, we can actually grow our own patches of wild growth in our gardens.

This involves letting parts of your garden just do their own thing. You can help things along by sewing a collection of native wild seeds across your wild growth area, including grasses and hedgerow plants.

There are many perfect native plants for wildlife in the UK, and these can be just as beautiful as those you might choose to plant in a landscaped garden. These plants will help local pollinator populations as well as provide extra habitats for some of the UK’s threatened wildlife.
