With temperatures reaching record highs and scientists warning us to change our lifestyles to protect the planet for future generations, now is the time to adapt our behaviour.
Reducing your carbon footprint can seem a mammoth task and knowing where to start can be half the battle.
With these five simple tips, you can be assured you are making a positive change.
1. Electric Vehicles
We are all reliant on our cars and you may think giving up your wheels entirely is the only way to reduce your carbon footprint.
However, over recent years, electric vehicles have made huge strides and are rapidly becoming the vehicle of choice for eco-conscious drivers.
If you are on the fence about investing in an EV, find out more by reading LV’s ultimate guide to the pros and cons of electric vehicles – this in-depth electric car guide covers everything from costs to the practicality of how far one charge will take you to help you decide if the switch to an electric car is right for your family.
2. Laundry
If you are in the habit of wearing clothes once and then washing them, changing your ways can make a big difference to your carbon footprint.
If clothes are clean, freshen them up with a spritz of water and essential oil rather than running a wash. Wait until you have a full load before turning on your machine and if clean clothes get a dirty mark on them, consider a spot clean instead.
3. Light Bulbs
If you haven’t made the switch to LED lightbulbs, this is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint as well as energy costs.
LED lightbulbs can use up to 90% less electricity – good news for both your finances and the environment.
4. Reusable Bags
Single-use plastics are having a huge impact on our planet and carrier bags are a big part of that.
The convenience has meant many of us are reliant on them, and even the plastic bag charges brought in haven’t completely stopped us. Making the change to a reusable bag (ideally not plastic) is a simple way to reduce your carbon footprint.
Cotton tote bags are in fashion and better for the environment – make it part of your look and style out your trip to the supermarket.
5. Diet
Changing your diet can seem like a challenge but small adaptations can have a big impact on the environment.
Consider the distance your food travels – where possible, buy local to reduce air miles. Salad items such as lettuce, herbs, and chilli peppers can be grown on a windowsill, as can bean shoots and tomatoes. You don’t need a kitchen garden or allotment to grow your own!
Reducing the amount of meat and dairy you consume will also reduce your carbon footprint. You don’t need to go fully vegan to make a difference – why not try meat-free Mondays or swapping from dairy to soya milk? Small changes can make a big difference.
Whatever changes you make, be proud of yourself for taking steps to reduce your carbon footprint. The next generation will thank you for it.
