They say a week is a long time in politics - and these days, it seems to be a long time in football too. After finishing the season 8th in League Two Chesterfield have now turned their attention to the 2013/14 campaign.
There have been significant personnel changes already at the PROACT - with more to come.
On the day that the first signing was announced, The Chesterfield Post talked to CEO Chris Turner about the new recruits, the Academy and the prospect of another Performer on the pitch this summer.
Chris also talked of his admiration of and respect for Sir Alex Ferguson, having played under him for a short while.
He also told us which new staff member has hidden talents!
You've been in post now for 14 months Chris, a hectic 14 months - and so far a busy closed period. Your thoughts on it so far...
"It's gone by very, very quickly I must say! When I first came in, there was a massive race on to get loan players in, in that particular January window.
"Then we started winning games and then we started winning games in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy and then we got to the JPT final which obviously, we won, which was a great period of time.
"Then we had relegation, which was a sad time obviously.
"We then had Elton John and the concert.
"We've had a change of manager not once but twice - with John (Sheridan) and Tommy (Wright) - and then last season, running so close in the end was disappointing but rewarding that we can see that we're going in the right direction.
"And now, we've had a changeover in coaching staff!
"So, quite a busy 14 months!
"But I've enjoyed it and am very optimistic for the future, the way the club's going and the way that off-the-field activities are improving, so I'm very optimistic for the future."
Let's talk about the changes in personnel, particularly incomings, as I don't think we've really spoken since Tommy, Mark (Crossley), Dave (Bentley), Mark (Jules) and John (Dungworth) left and the new guys came in. Talk about the new guys first if possible...
"Leam (Richardson)'s got a wealth of experience in League Two and obviously he's managed in League Two since Paul left..."
Was that a surprise - that he wanted to come here as Assistant and take what I suppose some might think was a backwards step?
"Well, no, because I spoke to Leam (below) before he came. He's only 33 and I said to him that you've got many years in front of you before you really need to be knuckling down as a manager.
"He might be a manager before he's 36-37 don't get me wrong, but he's got plenty of time and scope in front of him.
He works well with Paul, he knows Paul well and, no disrespect to Accrington, but Leam sees this as a step up, not a step back and if he can get success - which I'm sure he will do with Paul - he'll certainly see it as a step forward, so Leam's going to bring a lot of experience, enthusiasm and a great work ethic to the first team."
And Kevin Lynch - he's a non league manager, not many people will know much about him, what do you know about him?
"Well Paul said to me, when I spoke with him this summer, that he wanted to bring somebody in whom he could groom into a manager / first team coach.
"Paul's said before, he's got loads of people who he's played with who he could call 'mates' who have got experience in the game, that he could bring to the club and he could put in that position - but what he's wanted to do is bring hungry people to the club, not people who have seen it and done it all the time, who just move from one club to another - and he wants to bring that work ethic into the club.
"Kevin has managed at Marine, in a tough division and Paul has looked into his background and knows him as well, he knows that he'll bring something to the management team that he feels we lack and he'll groom Kevin and improve him as a coach - with experience - which once again which will be beneficial to Chesterfield."
And Eric Nixon came in this morning, as a former Goalkeeper yourself, I'm guessing you know a little bit about him?
"I know Eric (left) well, as I employed Eric at Sheffield Wednesday when I was Manager. I brought Eric to the club so I know Eric's work ethic and I know what Eric will bring to this club.
"Once again, goalkeeping coaching, yes it is a specialised position but it's a very important position and the makeup of this coaching staff has been important.
"See, the relationship between the dressing room and the coaches room is paramount and you've got to drive that first team dressing room forward.
"You've got to have characters that get in there that can lift spirits when times are not so good, coach and encourage them when required, but also have the experience to be able to handle the dressing room - and I think now we've got some fantastic coaches, a great situation.
"Eric is very much an extrovert, great personality - does a great Elvis Presley show! Eric is a strong character - just what we need."
We’ll talk about the Academy staff in a minute but first of all, tell us about the hopes for the Academy. I've talked to Liam Sutcliffe and it's something which I know is very much at the heart of the club and the ethos of the club going forward...
"It's important that with this EPPP that we're on board with - from day one when I came in, everyone was saying all our best players have gone to Sheffield United or to Derby or whatever - and there's a number of players who are at Sheffield United at the moment that are Chesterfield lads, people were telling me about where we had a cup final and there wasn't one representative from Chesterfield.
"Now it wasn't as bad as that, things get blown out of proportion etc etc, but it certainly needed something doing about it.
"So I brought the development situation on board which now means we have 350 odd kids from Leeds, Sheffield and Chesterfield training one night a week and on Saturdays - playing interactive games between each town and giving them the opportunity of being coached professionally, but still playing for their grass roots club on Sunday, which is a massive thing, because too much pressure is being applied on young players.
"They get tied into an academy with a professional club and they can't do this, they can't do that, they don't enjoy that and they lose that spark.
"Playing with their mates on Sunday is important for those that want to do it. We've enabled that now with a flourishing development squad - they've been to Holland and he's now looking at taking some squads to Germany. It's a great experience for these young players.
"Then, with the Academy, we've got players signed in the Academy and obviously, we're wanting players from the Development Squad moving up through the Academy to improve their quality. We've got the Academy and the Development Squad together so that we have that progression through for young players.
"Some players will drop out of the Academy and they could go back into the Development Squad if they wish.
"There'll be players in that Development Squad who will still sign for Wednesday, Forest, Derby, but we are giving them a chance and we are putting Chesterfield Football Club in their face first of all - to try and get that relationship.
"We might not get 'em all but we might get some who wouldn't have signed for us."
And Mark Smith and Gerry Carr are on hand to take that forward?
"Mark Smith has a great background in youth coaching - Barnsley, Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United. A great coach, inspirational.
"Gerry Carr worked with Paul at Sligo as his Assistant - already made a great impact with parents that we had on Tuesday night, explaining what we wanted to do.
"With all the coaching staff, it's all about standards - set your standards high (and these people have set the standards very high) - and I've got nothing but encouragement and optimism for the future of our young players and obviously, our first team."
Manager Paul Cook and his new Backroom staff, joined today by Eric Nixon.

So - the future's bright as far as you’re concerned?
"Well I think so! In life, you need that bit of luck and you need things to go for you - and you need to work hard to get that bit of luck. There's one thing that's certain - the coaching philosophy at the club is hard work, enjoyment and improve the players that we've got, whatever level they're at."
Talking about some of the players, I think Mark Randall, Drew Talbot and Jacob Hazel were due to be discussed - I'm guessing Richard Brindley is a difficult one as he's been injured - has there been any development with any of that yet?
"Well Paul's trying to contact Drew. We've spoken a couple of times this week and he's not been able to - whether he's on holiday or he's just sitting at home waiting for a phone call to go somewhere else, I don't know!
"The bottom line is we want Drew to stay at the club but we can't if someone comes along with X amount of a deal, then there's nothing we can do about it. From our point of view, we want Drew to stay at the club and we are trying to get him to stay at the club."
One young man you've signed this morning, 6'8" I believe, so a big lad, is Aaron Chapman...
"To be fair, our Chief Scout Paul Mitchell saw Aaron (left) playing in Parkgate in Sheffield Sunday league. He saw him play in a particular game and came in the next morning and spoke very highly of him.
"Sometimes with Sunday League, you think "I don't know..." and that's how it was at the time. Mark Crossley went and saw him play on a couple of occasions.
"The next thing he was at Norwich - and we thought that Norwich City had signed him - but then he appeared on the radar again at Belper.
"Paul and Mark saw him play a couple of times and we invited him to train with us with the best wishes of Belper - and he did extremely well!
"He's got all the attributes that will give him the opportunity of being a professional goalkeeper, so we've signed him up today and we're hoping to sort a deal out with Belper that suits everybody."
Are there any prospects of any more coming in soon?
"The manager is working daily with his staff to set targets up. They've been working since well before the end of the season targeting players because, as everybody knows, recruitment is so important and picking up players on loan - on a wing and a prayer - has failed. It's failed in the past at this club.
"I think in the season we got relegated from League One, we loaned 13 players that season - and that's a costly business and didn't work out, so we don't want to go down that route next season.
"It's important that any loan players that are brought in are coming in to do a specific job, because we've got players out injured. The recruitment of the first team squad is massive and they've been out looking, digging into backgrounds for three months."
You’ve spoken to me before about your admiration of Paul and he has enjoyed what appears to me to be unprecedented backing from the Board in bringing his own people in - does that put more pressure on him next season?
"I think it brings - and this is no disrespect to Tommy, Mark, Dave, Mark and John, who have left the club - from my experience in management, I did pretty much the same that Paul's done, worked with people who are in situ when you come to a club.
"It's not easy because you don't really know people, you don't know how they work, as times going along you're learning things about each other and it's not that easy.
"Whereas, the people now that are around him - he knows what they are going to bring to the club, they know what he wants from them and it can only help him.
"Our situation is that we want to be successful, the club wants to be successful but so do 72 other League clubs and how are you going to become successful?
"We believe that what we're doing is going to give him the best possibility of being successful - and if you work hard at your job and you work hard at everything that surrounds the football club, not just the first team but the club itself, it's giving you the best possibility of doing it.
"From the football club's point of view, I think it's important that we don't become a 'hire-and-fire' club. I think it proved it last season where we had two managers before Paul but still only just failed to get into the playoffs. So, knee-jerk reactions during the season don't work.
"We want Paul and his team to be successful but I think it's important that we look at success over a longer period of time - not over a few weeks - you have to build foundations and that's what we're doing with this coaching team, this Academy Squad and the team that surrounds it - building up strong solid foundations which are going to help them to be successful.
"It doesn't mean throwing money at the players, throwing money at the squad, we want to progress and be successful and on a timescale that works for everyone."
But I guess the ultimate aim is to get out of League Two hopefully this year?
"We need to get out of League Two for various reasons - as quickly as possible! But once again, 23 other clubs are wanting to do the same and when you look at where we ended up last season, you have to look at the season ahead with optimism.
"I know the players he's trying to bring in, that we've got. Eoin Doyle's a quality striker that we've signed..."
Has he signed a full contract yet?
"Yeah, yeah. He'll bring a lot of quality to the front, he's very hard working, he's always in the right positions at the right time - I've seen two goals he's scored against Kilmarnock this week. Once again, people of that ilk being brought into the club will make us better."
Is there a concert this year?
"Well without saying too much, I think that we're hoping in the next seven days to come with a yes or a no."
It's not Eric's 'Elvis Presley' show is it?
"It might be a yes then!"
Am I right in thinking that you played under Sir Alex Ferguson - it's a hell of an achievement 26 years isn't it?
"A hell of an achievement! I had 18 months with him, so he's done fantastically well. We've just been talking about Chesterfield - Manchester United were the same, it took him four or five years to get the turnover of players.
"In today's modern game, no manager gets that amount of time and I don't think any manager will get that amount of time again, but it's just the way the world is. Football supporters demand success.
"But I believe that football clubs - it's been mentioned this last two weeks - that when you're on the inside and you know what a certain person can do and you know he's doing the right things, you know he'll get it right eventually.
"That was Bobby Charlton's position at Manchester United - the Chairman, Martin Edwards at that time, could see that the person was doing the right things and just needed the right breaks at the right time - and he got that.
"He was fortunate at that period of time but in today's game, he wouldn't have got that long.
"To answer the question that you asked me before, that's what we're trying to do here. Sir Alex has had a fantastic career and at the time he came, Liverpool were so dominant - and we thought we'd never see anyone taking over from Liverpool - so he had a massive mountain to climb. It took him time but he climbed it."
And another retiree this week is David Beckham. A great role model...
"I think that David Beckham has been absolutely fantastic for the game. The way he conducts himself on and off the field. OK, there's been one or two spats on the field - but that's football - off the field, he's conducted himself professionally and he's played to the highest of his abilities and he's won a lot of things.
"Yes, he has played for the best teams of the times - and he's a great role model for sport, never mind football - and I'm sure he's going to be in the public eye more than ever. He is great for any young player to look up to.
"Premiership players get paid massive amounts of money but someone like David Beckham is worth every penny, because he not only has played well, but he's worked hard to be able to play, week-in week-out. He's a great Amabassador!"
