Preview: A Hatful Of Points For The Spireites Tonight?

Tuesday 1st February 2011
by PAUL FISHER

At the end of last season, Stockport County, fresh from being taken over and released from administration, appointed Paul Simpson as the new manager of the relegated Hatters.

Since that period Stockport have had a horrible time- being relegated and currently finding themselves bottom of the Football League having played four matches more than the team who occupy the safest spot in the Division.

Stockport have conceded the most in the Division and especially the most at home, however Chesterfield Assistant Manager Tommy Wright insists this will be no easy match, "League positions count for nothing and this means we will prepare properly".

The Spireites will probably go into this match without striker Jack Lester, who left the pitch early in the second half in the Spireites 2-2 draw with Bradford City with a hamstring injury.

Defender Simon Ford did not return for the second half of the game as he reported a knee injury.

There is also a concern about an injury to Gregor Robertson following Saturday's match.

The mood in the camp is slightly tempered by the fact that Scott Boden is now available to join the squad for the Stockport game.

Dean Morgan and Aaron Downes remain the long term absentees, although Morgan is not likely to be too far away.

Chesterfield do not have a great record at Edgeley Park, with only 6 wins, including a 2-0 win on the 4th Division playoffs back in 1990.

The Spireites last won at Stockport back in 2005 when a 2-1 victory saw Mark Debolla and a wonder strike from Mark Allott give the Spireites all three points.

Last time at Edgeley Park, Chesterfield and Stockport drew 2-2, with Steve Fletcher giving the Spireites a 16th minute lead before Liam Dickinson and Anthony Elding gave the Hatters the advantage before Jack Lester levelled.

County, since losing 4-1 to the Spireites on New Years Day, have still not won a game, the last match at which they obtained three points was away to Barnet on 28th December.

The only time they have won at home this season was against the same opponents back in October some 9 home matches ago.

The day after the sacking of Paul Simpson, Caretaker Manager Peter Ward signed former County favourite Anthony Elding on loan from Rochdale for the rest of the season.

Former Spireite loanee Ishmel Demontagnac also joined the Hatters on loan from Blackpool and he was joined by Seasiders teammate Stephen Husband.

Newcastle United youngster Peter Grieve also signed and it has just been announced that former Spireite defender Alan Goodall has joined the Hatters from Rochdale.

County have also signed goalkeeper Owen Fon Williams, plus Aaron Brown and Daniel O'Donnell to bolster the sides defensive options.
