Sunday 6th February 2011
by PAUL FISHER
Deane Smalley bagged two more goals as Chesterfield were forced to come back from behind for the third consecutive match to grab a point.
The Spireites remain on top of League Two and five points clear, but were determined to grab a result from a spirited Shots display, which almost ended the Spireite's ten match unbeaten run.
Chesterfield made one change from the side which drew at Stockport midweek, Jack Lester replaced Ian Morris and Chesterfield pushed Smalley onto the left wing with the usual partnership of Craig Davies and Lester upfront.
New signing Dean Holden had to be content with a place on the bench.
Former Chesterfield striker Wade Small was on the bench for Aldershot after missing the midweek abandoned match against Barnet with a virus.
Another welcome back to football was the return of Sian Massey, the assistant referee unfortunately caught up in the row between Sky Sports and their former Super Sunday presenters Richard Keys and Andy Gray.
The Spireites hit the ground running with a goal after seven minutes, following a long throw from Mark Allott, a quick flick on from Ian Breckin and Smalley was there to nod the ball past Jamie Young.
The referee booked three Aldershot players in quick succession - Herd, McGlashan and Grand for various trips as the Spireites continued to dominate the first half.
As the rain continued to lash down in North Derbyshire, the Spireites lost concentration and Tim Sills scored his first goal on his return to Aldershot from Stevenage.
The Shots continued to press following their buoyed confidence from the equaliser.
Tommy Lee kept Chesterfield at bay with two clearances off the line by Javan Vidal and Lester, before Aldershot were awarded a penalty from referee Taylor.
A cross came into the box and Mark Allott, with his back to the ball, put his arm up and the ball appeared to hit him on the shoulder region, however, the referee was perfectly placed and gave his decision.
Alex Rodman, whose cross had set up Sills for the opener, was on hand to indirectly give Sills his second. Rodman placed the spot kick to the right of Lee, who saved, the following Spireite defenders remained static though and Sills was on hand to place the ball into the corner.
Chesterfield had been in this position before, the midfield pressed as John Sheridan brought on Jordan Bowery and Ian Morris for Jack Lester and the ineffective Davies.
Chesterfield then levelled with five minutes to go, a neat through ball from Whitaker to Smalley saw Herd slip which allowed Smalley to gather momentum and slot past Young for his seventh of the season.
The Spireites couldn’t find a way through the Shots defence in the final moments.
QUOTES:
Chesterfield Assistant Manager, Tommy Wright said, "Frustrating thing is we started so brightly, and in the end we were fortunate to get a point."
Aldershot Manager, Dean Holdsworth stated, "To come to a club like this and get a point to a match we very nearly won is excellent and disappointing at the same time, full credit to my team though."
CONCLUSION:
During the season you have peaks and troughs, if drawing three matches on the bounce during a ten match unbeaten run is a trough, I think most supporters would take that.
I would also state that five wins and five draws is quite commendable in a potential promotion season. Chesterfield did the double over Rochdale and Bournemouth, and also defeated Notts County at Saltergate.
All three teams went up automatically, so far no side has done the league double over the Spireites.
Patience is a virtue that football supporters don't possess, in this instance, I urge the majority to buy a dose of it.
