'Storm Brewing' - Chesterfield v Burton Albion - A Fan's View

Sunday 14th November 2010
by Paul Fisher

Saturday's match, played in front of another record-breaking crowd at the B2net wasn't exactly the game of football that the press hacks had anticipated.

Chesterfield failed to deliver the killer punch and were arguably outplayed by a Burton Albion side that certainly used the strongarm tactics, coupled with their ability to try to play football.

The attractive nature of this fixture was that, "both sides like to play football" - this was largely ignored in a scrappy match for which full credit must be praised on the visitor's tactics.

The Spireites struggled to cope with the physical nature of Burton's game. Their 4-5-1 formation worked a treat against a lacklustre Chesterfield side looking for a way to implement their ideas.

The hard working Jim Collins upfront for the Brewers caused the Spireites defence no end of problems and it was Collins who scored the games opening goal, largely also thanks to a mix up between Jack Hunt and Simon Ford.

Chesterfield ended the first half with the momentum though and a goal right on the stroke of half time should have been the catalyst for further improvement in the second.

Sadly, the Spireites chose to leave themselves firmly rooted in the dressing room. If it wasn't for Tommy Lee's heroics in goal, then the Spireites could have been out of the game within the first five minutes of the second half.

Now, so far I have failed to mention the referee who was now starting to make an impression on the game. Lee Mason, a current Premier League official who had previously been involved in some sort of controversy in his previous outings and who's brother Andy was a former Chesterfield player, decided to send Derek Niven to run the baths early on in the second half.

This was a very harsh decision. Most of the ground stared in disbelief as the referee gave Derek a straight red for a high-ish challenge, but nothing compared to some of the later tackles which Mason appeared to give a wide berth, making him became public enemy number one in Spireite fans eyes.

Paul Peschisolido, the Brewers manager, agreed that the decision was a harsh one. This of course was by no means a decision which was going to change the course of the game. However, at 11 versus 10 it would have a bearing.

Burton by this time were enjoying the extra room and the Spireites had to work doubly hard to avoid going further goals down. It had to happen in the end though, and from an improbable angle, Shaun Harrad, leading goalscorer for the Brewers, tucked a shot away in a nice fashion and it was a first defeat at the B2net in the league for the tabletoppers.

Jordan Bowery had a glorious chance to level matters in the dying embers of the game, the keeper though had other ideas and Bowery should have done better.

Lesson learned I think.

Burton to their credit tactically got it spot on. Stifle the Spireites midfield and wings and grab an early goal. It worked and full credit to them.

Chesterfield, meanwhile will dust themselves down and get back on the march towards promotion, as it is the overall goal.
