One of my colleagues commented to me following the victory over Accrington on Tuesday night, 5 - 2, that if 'we' (Chesterfield I hasten to add) keep this up then we are on course to get 75 home goals this season.
This statistic rather amused me and I thought back to the halcyon days of grubbing out a 1-0 win at home in the mid nineties, days when drinking beer pre-match was to take a form of counselling, rather than spend it hiding behind your fingers as the opposition peppered your goal after you had taken an early lead.
Believe it or not we have scored more goals at home than when we got promoted (albeit via the playoffs) in 1995!
Already we have amassed a massive 27 goals this season, add another 13 from the opposition and that's 40 if my maths is correct.
This doesn't include the three goals scored in the League Cup tie either.
Back under John Duncan in 1995 it was apparent that attacking fare wasn't in his curriculum vitae, so grinding out and preserving with added on time forays by the opposition into our half were common ground.
Forward on time and fifteen years later we are seeing attacking football at it's best. It's not quite Kevin Keegan and his 'attack at all costs' Newcastle side of the early nineties yet and hopefully not.
Following Saturday's goalless draw at Stevenage, the fantastic crowd of over 6,000 on a wet and windy Whittington Moor wanted to see some goals and the Spireites duly provided that, and some.
Craig Davies (I keep adding his name to this report just about every week) bagged another couple, Danny Whitaker also got his name on the scoresheet twice, one from the penalty spot and his second was perhaps the move of the night.
Jack Lester was troublesome for Stanley and his presence unnerved them and at the moment, I'd like to think that we can't do without him - he thoroughly deserved his goal.
Accrington showed character and for large worrying parts were the dominant side. Jimmy Ryan, their playmaker, started wide but pushed infield and really, that helped Chesterfield much more than when he was on the flanks.
Andy Proctor held firm in midfield and the impressive Sean McConville starred for the iconic Lancashire Club. John Coleman the Accrington manager and local legend, was quite rightly annoyed with his side and kept them in the dressing room for a considerable period after the game. Stanley are starting to ship goals on a regular basis and that's something that will need to be addressed and quick.
Accrington won't trouble the relegation spots, but with defending like that, then they won't see much promotion either.
Back to the Spireites though and they take number one spot with only the thought of being shot down, it's in our hands now!
Being shot down of course is something which the FA Cup is good at and Chesterfield make their way to North-West London to face a Harrow Borough side four divisions below them in the non-league pyramid.
It's going to be nervy and tense, but the Spireites will have too much for them, I hope.
Just to add, ITV will show extended highlights of the match late on Saturday night.
