Wednesday 20th October 2010
Chesterfield's new flagship stadium has been named as one of six venues to host the Under-21 European Championship in 2013 if England's bid to host the tournament is successful.
The B2NET made the list along with four other grounds in the Midlands - the City Ground (Nottingham Forest), Pride Park (Derby County), Meadow Lane (Notts County), and Greenhouse Meadow (Shrewsbury Town). Wembley has been lined up to host the final.
The Football Association are showing UEFA delegates around this week, as they conduct an inspection for a report on the quality of infrastructure, stadia, transport and hotels in this country.
Chesterfield FC chief executive Carol Wilby said: "Along with the FA we have been delighted to welcome the delegates from UEFA, as part of their week-long technical inspection visit to assess England's bid to host the UEFA 2013 Under-21 European Championship Finals."
She added: "The chance to host European football at the B2net Stadium is not only a very exciting proposition for the football club, but it will also be a real boost to Chesterfield and North Derbyshire."
During the visit, the FA, along with its host towns and cities, aims to demonstrate a commitment to UEFA that it can create and offer an unrivalled platform for the 2013 UEFA European Championship Finals, and provide a memorable tournament for players, fans, and local communities.
England are bidding to host the tournament on these shores for the first time and will compete with Bulgaria, Israel and the Czech Republic for the right to do so. A decision will be made by UEFA in December.
Last week England became the only team to have qualified for the past three UEFA Under-21 European Championship Finals, as Stuart Pearce's Young Lions beat Romania to qualify for the 2011 Finals in Denmark.
