'The Taming Of The Shrews'.
CFC v Shrewsbury - A Fan's View...

Tuesday 26th October 2010
by Paul Fisher

Saturday was a day of note for the Spireites - the biggest crowd at the new ground and the largest attendance for almost two decades.

All week the chatter of the Chesterfield public was "Are you going to the match?" and the 7,777 crowd suggests most of the football loving townsfolk in Chesterfield were.

Last weekend Chesterfield hit top spot for the first time this season and were aiming to defeat a Shrewsbury side who themselves were planted in the playoff zone.

At the start of the game both sides were getting a feeler together with the majority of attacking show placed on the backburner for the time being.

You would expect the Shropshire side to be a little perturbed bearing in mind their late arrival at the B2net. The Shrews coach was caught up in the snarling M1 traffic and they arrived about 2.30pm.

Half an hour into the game though and the Spireites exploded into action. Goals from Talbot and Lester saw Chesterfield gather pace and in-form striker Craig Davies repeated his two goal salvo from the last Saturday. Davies' first effort just before half time defies superlatives, it was immense, the body shape and the strike all rolled into one, hitting the Kop net before anyone could blink and the icing on the Spireites foursome.

There were a few wobbles towards the end, the collective term for this being 'hairy' according to most commentators at the game.

Three Shrewsbury goals dampened something of a glorious day, but nevertheless that couldn’t spoil the smiles on the faces of the Spireite supporters.

All day long I was hearing of people who hadn't been to the match for several years, but the new renaissance that is happening at the B2net, and every man jack wishing to see the Spireites at the minute, can only bode well for the Town and the Football Club.

More exposure of this sort again will definitely be something the club wishes to cling onto. Even the BBC with their late night 'Football League Show' were in attendance and were in fact (and I'll whisper this quietly) very, very surprised and impressed at the media facilities which are of Championship level.

Meanwhile, whenever you think of football in England you think of the FA Cup. Chesterfield, of course, have their own romance of 1997 and the Semi-Final place to remember. The World's oldest competition is very much of a leveller as the Spireites have found out since. Enfield, Basingstoke and Droylsden are just three of the Non-League sides that have put the North Derbyshire side through the mill in recent times.

Lets hope that Harrow Borough of the Ryman League Premier Division isn't added to that list.
