The Spireites, donning their new third strip of white shirts with black shorts, remain unbeaten in the league after an intriguing and somewhat controversial encounter at a rather damp Spotland.
The Spireites took the lead in the first half via a Marc Richards header (left), but two controversial penalty decisions in Dale's favour within the space of a minute around the half hour mark, saw Andy Tutte eventually net one to draw level.
Scott Hogan then put Rochdale in front six minutes into the second half, before Gary Roberts levelled the scoring for the visitors shortly after the hour mark.
Paul Cook kept faith with last week's starting eleven whilst new recruits Ian Evatt and Jamie Devitt watched from the stands.
Dale manager Keith Hill made two changes to his starting line up - Andy Tutte replaced the suspended Peter Cavanagh, while on loan youngster Jack O'Connell started ahead of Ashley Eastham who was on the bench.
The Spireites started brightly and put Rochdale under pressure in the opening ten minutes, though their quick passing game and early pressure failed to break a resolute Dale defence.
However, for all the Spireites possession and movement, the first attempt on goal came on 13 minutes through Dale's Ian Henderson who picked the ball up on the edge of the Spireites area, but his shot was too high to trouble keeper, Tommy Lee.
Two minutes later though and Cook's men had their first real chance of the game - Jay O'Shea released Gary Roberts who fired a shot straight at Dale'keeper Josh Lillis.
Just minutes later Chesterfield did open the scoring. The Rochdale defence stood still, allowing Marc Richards to nod his second goal of the season past Lillis after getting on the end of a great cross from Roberts.
0-1
Shortly afterwards, Rochdale's George Donnelly picked up the first booking of the afternoon - after Drew Talbot had broken out of the defence the striker hacked down the right back, resulting in a yellow card.
At this point, the Spireites had gone top of the League, but Dale were shortly to spoil the party - the game upped a gear and went wild - if not slightly mad - shortly before the half hour mark, after Dale were awarded two penalties inside the space of a minute.
Keith Hill's side were awarded their first spot kick on 27 minutes after Michael Rose was felled on the edge of the area by Sam Morsy.
Referee Haines appeared to give a free kick on the edge of the area but his linesman thought differently and eventually, to much Spireite disbelief, a penalty was given. George Donnelly stepped up to but his effort hit the upright and was panically cleared.
The ball came quickly back into the danger area, and Dale were given their second spot kick in a jammed packed box. Lee (left) appeared to slide to gather the ball but in doing so he bumped into Hogan. Again referee Haines appeared to give nothing, but his linesman flagged for another spot kick.
To add insult to injury, the referee brandished yellow cards to Lee and Roberts for their protests.
Andy Tutte smashed this spot kick into the back of the net giving Lee no chance to level the scoring on 31 minutes.
1-1
The rest of the half seem to flash by with the Spireites clearly feeling aggrieved by the officiating, and they were perhaps guilty of playing the officials rather more than competent Dale side. Marc Richards went close though and indeed, should have added a second goal but Lillis saved his low drive.
Dale took control of the remainder of the half - on 36 minutes, Hogan was denied by the feet of Lee, before Tutte fired over the bar from the follow up effort.
Sam Hird received a yellow card for a foul on Donnelly on the edge of the box, and minutes later, brought down the same man in a similar area and was perhaps lucky not to see a second yellow the home fans were yelling for.
The lanky Peter Vincenti had an effort cleared off the line six minutes later, and Hogan had the last opportunity of the half as he sent a shot narrowly past the post.
HT: 1-1
The second half began as the first had ended - within 30 seconds of the start , the Referee had booked Rochdale striker Hogan for persistent foul play.
The impressive Hogan though, wasn't to be put off and, on 51 minutes, he put Dale ahead after Rose picked him out in the middle of the pitch and he flicked the ball out to Henderson on the wing. Henderson used his pace to free himself for his marker and he found Hogan who had matched his run. After getting on the end of the ball just inside the area, Hogan fired a shot across the face of goal and in at the far post from an acute angle to give Dale the lead.
2-1
Rochdale now looked dangerous and Paul Cook started to change things - firstly bringing on Eoin Doyle for Nathan Smith and a few minutes later Liam Cooper for Blackburn loanee Ryan Edwards, who was beginning to struggle.
It appeared to do the trick as on 65, Gary Roberts (left) pulled the Spireites back level, Jimmy Ryan playing a wonderful ball over the top, which Roberts ran onto and chipped over the onrushing Lillis to bring the visitors level.
2-2
The game was now end to end without many clear cut chances and, as the rain poured down, Dale manager Keith Hill made his first substitution on 79 minute with Matty Done replacing the impressive Hogan.
There was a nervy finish to the match as Chesterfield looked to find a winner.
Jay O'Shea twice had opportunities on goal, but could only fire over from his first, and into the hands of Lillis with his second. With 15 minutes remaining, Joe Rafferty entered the referee's busy notebook, fouling Roberts 25 yards out. Ryan took the free-kick, but his effort flew well over the crossbar.
Paul Cook made his third and final substitution with Tendayi Darikwa replacing goal-scorer Roberts on 82.
The lively Doyle went close just after the fourth official indicated four minutes added time - the Irishmans effort flew just over the crossbar.
FT: 2-2
In the end a good point which leaves the Spireites unbeaten in the League, with what should prove to be an intriguing game with early pace setter Southend next up at the Proact Arena next Saturday.
