What Has Derbyshire Ever Done For The World?

Monday 29th October 2012

Hear the word 'Derbyshire' and most people think of the beautiful landscapes of the Peak District, and rightly so, but one particular river valley has contributed far more to the history of the world than you might think.

What Has Derbyshire Ever Done For The World?

And now, local residents can hear how the area led events that changed the direction of the world.

The Derwent Valley, between Derby and Matlock Bath can claim to be the birthplace of the factory system.

Innovators and entrepreneurs like Richard Arkwright and the Strutt family harnessed the river to power their textile mills, and changed history. So important was this development, that this unique industrial landscape has been designated a world heritage site.

Adrian Farmer, from the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, will be revealing the amazing history which is right on our doorstep, at a talk at Chesterfield Museum (pictured above) on Friday 2nd November at 2pm.

Tickets available from Chesterfield Visitor Information Centre and the Pomegranate Theatre, £4 and £3.

Special Offer for the Museum's internet friends! Buy a ticket for Adrian's talk and stay on for a tour 'behind the scenes' at Chesterfield Museum. Numbers are limited, so when you book your ticket, please ask to be put on the tour list.
