As we have previously reported, Chesterfield continues to enjoy both consumer and company retail confidence - and the high profile arrivals of Debenhams and Hawkshead seem to evidence that.
However, the town also retains the confidence of those looking to set up new business ventures and, last week, after unveiling the sculptures in 'The Yards', (story HERE) the Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, Cllr John Burrows (pictured above with Sharna, Damian and young customer Ruby) and The Mayor and Mayoress of Chesterfield opened a new business venture in the same shopping area. Both said they were thrilled to be welcoming new trade to Chesterfield.
Sharna (below) and her partner Damian, opened their new shop 'baby luv' in Theatre Yard, next to the Credit Union shop and along with telling us why they wanted to be taking premises during these difficult times, Sharna also offered a fascinating insight into the difficulties facing working mums and her determination to overcome them.
"I wanted to get back into work, but it's very difficult with childcare. I started getting out doing markets and things but logistically, trying to get my little one into nursery wasn't happening at 5am! Having premises made it easier to get into retail.
"I've always been in retail, but for me to go and work for someone else and do a part time job - it's difficult with childcare and expense and also timing - people want flexibility in retail and you can't offer that when you have children. We both got made redundant at the time I became pregnant - I got told for 10 years that I couldn't get pregnant without IVF, so he was a bit of a shock!
"We went through how are we going to bring up this baby, but we did it. We went to car boots and bought second hand, so we thought that we know what we're doing and wanted to open a baby shop selling new and second hand.
"The climate at the moment means that second hand is our biggest area - we can't turn it round quick enough and it's lovely to have premises. We started on line but people like to see what they're buying, so to have this place is lovely and it's been really busy! The feedback has been amazing - they say they're glad we're here!"
Along with brand new baby clothes, toys and equipment, baby luv also sell second hand goods .People with second hand stuff to sell can ring the shop on 07833 592478 and Sharna will drive out and have a look.
