Monday 19th November 2012
Council leaders throughout Derbyshire have joined together to pledge their on-going support for the country's Armed Forces by signing a new community covenant - and Derbyshire County Council hosted a signing event today (November 19th) at its County Hall headquarters in Matlock.
County Council Chairman Councillor George Wharmby was joined by civic leaders from Derbyshire's eight borough and district councils, and the Mayor of Derby City, Councillor Lisa Higginbottom, to sign the joint covenant alongside Brigadier Harry Nickerson, Commander of 49 (East) Brigade (below).
(l-r) (seated) - Derbyshire County Council Chairman Councillor George Wharmby and Brigadier Harry Nickerson, Commander of 49 (East) Brigade (standing) George Cowcher, Chief Executive of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce, Bernard Page, Derbyshire Chairman of the Royal British Legion, Councillor John Nelson, Mayor of Amber Valley Borough Council, Councillor Ken Walker, Chairman of Bolsover District Council, Councillor Donald Parsons, Mayor of Chesterfield Borough Council, Councillor Lisa Higginbottom, Mayor of Derby City Council, Councillor Tony Milward, Chairman of Derbyshire Dales District Council, Councillor Jennifer Hulls, Mayor of Erewash Borough Council, Councillor Patrick Jenner, Mayor of High Peak Borough Council, Councillor Ken Savidge, Chairman of North East Derbyshire District Council, and Councillor Michael Bale, Chairman of South Derbyshire District Council, who all signed the Armed Forces Community Covenant.
Cllr Wharmby said he was delighted to be part of the initiative, saying, "We all owe a huge debt of gratitude to our armed forces - both past and present - for the sacrifices they make to keep us safe.
"Our support of the Armed Forces is without question and signing this joint covenant formalises the overwhelming backing throughout Derbyshire.
"We recognise that by working together we can provide unified support for serving and former Armed Forces members and their families who already live and work in Derbyshire - and to those who choose to re-settle into our community."
The community covenant is a two way agreement and encourages local organisations to help re-integrate former servicemen and servicewomen into civilian life, and members of the Armed Forces in turn do all they can to support their local community.
Derbyshire County Council signed the covenant alongside Amber Valley Borough Council, Bolsover District Council, Chesterfield Borough Council, Derbyshire Dales District Council, Erewash Borough Council, High Peak Borough Council, NE Derbyshire District Council, and South Derbyshire District Council.
George Cowcher signed the joint covenant on behalf of the county's business community in his role as Chief Executive of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce.
Also present at today's event were community organisations which support servicemen and women including Heanor-based Cafe, Heroes and Support for Local Heroes, Futures Homescape, Long Eaton-based charity Support our Forces, and Forces Recruitment Services, which matches ex-military candidates to civilian jobs in the region.
