Friday 4th March 2011
by PAUL FISHER
Venue: Abbey Business Stadium
Kick off: 3pm
The Spireites can claim an impressive record at Whaddon Road, now called the Abbey Business Stadium. In their previous four visits, Chesterfield have never conceded a goal and come away with the full points on two occasions.
The Spireites haven't lost to the Robins in nine matches overall either, earlier on in the season, Chesterfield thumped the Cheltenham side 3-0 in what was a very one sided match. Craig Davies bagged a double on that day including an absolute belter from outside the area, which until we played against Shrewsbury was going to be a contender for goal of the season, whereupon in my opinion he bettered against the Shrews.
Cheltenham manager Mark Yates expressed how fearful he was of the Spireites on current form, "Chesterfield are the best team we have played this season in my opinion and we've got to be up for the game. We need to have a game plan, but we need to have the belief that we can win too".
Cheltenham currently sit in 12th place with 44 points, they have ambitions of the playoffs and started the season off pretty well. At the turn of the year the Robins sat in 7th place however a horrific run of form has ensued with only 3 wins in 14 matches that has put the skids on any promotion ambitions at present.
Cheltenham can boast one of the top scorers in League Two with Wes Thomas leading the Robins attack with 18 goals in 31 appearances. He is ably supported by Jeff Goulding who left Bournemouth in the summer to come to the Abbey Business Stadium (Whaddon Road) and he has chipped in with 10 goals himself.
Goulding should be fit enough to come into the squad this weekend following an eye injury.
Further doubts for Cheltenham include Keith Lowe (ankle), Dave Bird (calf), Martin Riley (hamstring). However on loan Medy Elito should be fit following a virus that forced him to miss the match against Stockport on Tuesday night.
Good news coming from Cheltenham is that Ashley Eastham has extended his loan period from Blackpool for another month.
Chesterfield have no additional injury problems following the massive win over title rivals Wycombe on Tuesday night, Ian Breckin is expected to be able to travel following a virus which forced him to miss Tuesday. Mark Allott is definitely back in the squad, however Dwayne Mattis and Simon Ford are still on the sidelines for now.
MATCH REFEREE: James Linington (Isle of Wight) has refereed 27 matches this season and issued 78 yellow cards and 5 red cards. Has reffed Chesterfield before on John Sheridans league debut as manager of the Spireites which was a 2-0 defeat to Torquay.
He has also been in charge when the Spirietes lost 2-1 at Shrewsbury in February 2009,appeared at Saltergate once and officiated a 0-0 draw with Darlington. Linington has also reffed a Cheltenham match away at Walsall in Mar 2009 a 1-1 draw when the Robins were in League One.
