"They're A Good Side!" Paul Cook On Wimbledon - Plus Darikwa Interview

Saturday 14th September 2013

After seeing his squad make history by notching up the best start to a league campaign ever on account of last Saturday's win against Accrington, Paul Cook was in reflective mood as he faced the press yesterday.

After seeing his squad make history by notching up the best start to a league campaign ever on account of last Saturday's win against Accrington, Paul Cook was in reflective mood as he faced the press yesterday.Fresh from the announcement that Chesterfield had, on Friday morning, secured the services of Gary McSheffrey, Cook (left) observed that there was no room for joy at being top of the league and that with just 6 games in, there was a long way to go.

"The most important thing about any match is that you win it! After studying the DVD more than once, it was very difficult to get through Accrington. I was critical of our lads at half time that we weren't working hard enough to get the ball in deeper areas but, having watched the DVD, it was difficult.

"We have options at the club - we can go longer, more direct quicker - but one thing we must respect is that when teams come and play that deep, it's a mark of respect to the lads how far they've come and how they're playing.

"Things are going well for us at the moment but as we go into a blip, which every team has, we have great options to change the formation.

"For our supporters, we have games behind closed doors - and if they could see how lads were playing it would put a smile on their faces! They have great team spirit, work ethic and lads who are out the team now can go into the team and make it stronger - that's how well we're doing outside the main 11."

Eoin Doyle has done extremely well in those same behind closed doors games, scoring 3 in 8 and Cook acknowledged thisEoin Doyle (left), has done extremely well in those same behind closed doors games, scoring 3 in 8 and Cook acknowledged this, saying, "I just think it's important ever since I've been a manager, that you earn the right to get in the team and we've had the best start in the club's history yet.

"I'm going to change the team, so somewhere along the lines, I think lads have to be patient.

"We're not asking lads to be patient forever - all season - what we are saying to those that are starting, is that you've got lads chomping at the bit.

"Together we will win football matches, on our own we won't win anything but united, we will do well."

"Nathan Smith," Cook confirmed, "is suffering from scar tissue and has had an operation after feeling pain in his ankle. We felt it best that we go in and have a look - and it was scar tissue - it puts Nathan's mind at rest. I don't know the timescale, it's more about Nathan's speed of recovery."

Gary Roberts' heel isn't expected to be a problem either, says Cook, "Gary's Gary! He's fantastic around the place and he beats himself up if he doesn't play well in every game. Gary's heel is coming on - the bit of rain about the training ground's helped - and he's trained for the last two days. Gary's a fantastic player!"

Wimbledon has been the surprise package of League Two and Cook says that Neil Ardley has done a fantastic job, "He's come in a time when it looked likely that Wimbledon were likely to lose league status and for a young manager, it's a great learning curve. He'll have felt pressure that will stand him in good stead going forward.

"He's put together a new team, got some good players in and they are flying. I do think they'll come here with a game plan - to try to win the game. In Smith, they have a striker I've actually worked with and they have threats all over the pitch, they have experience all over the pitch. Neil's done a fantastic job and they're a really good side."

Cook confirmed that McSheffrey is fit to play but, "We have to be careful. He's been with us for two weeks - a week of that he's been injured (with a muscle problem), so he won't be up to full speed yet. Whether he's involved tomorrow remains to be seen but he will be soon."

And Ian Evatt will also feature soon says Cook, "Ian's chomping at the bit to play - it's great credit to him, lads have to be patient."

Gary McSheffrey also spoke to press and said that he was raring to go in a Chesterfield shirtAfter confirmation came yesterday morning that Gary McSheffrey (left) is to join the Spireites, initially for four months, the man himself spoke to press and said that he was raring to go in a Chesterfield shirt, "I was surplus to requirements at Coventry and when I agreed to mutually terminate the contract, Paul was the first to ring me the next morning and it showed eagerness.

"I came here on Thursday and trained - I liked what I saw and we agreed to a form of contract from there.

The level of training is a good standard. It's a good, decent squad here - I know a couple from playing previously and I think it's a club that's ready to go to the next level and beyond and it's going in the right direction.

It’s been a while since I had a game so I’m looking to get an opportunity to get out there and express myself and improve the team and help the lads out. This club is the right place for me to be and I just want to help the club”

"I could have sat on my contract for 2 years but you want to play football - you miss it on a Saturday. You don't play for money, you play because you love playing and that's what it came down to at the end. I needed to get back playing and the Gaffer has given me a good opportunity to get back amongst it.

"I'm at a stage now where I need to enjoy my football and watching the lads play and the gaffer's philosophy, I feel it's the right place to come and enjoy myself.

"You can’t be picky at the moment, you have to grasp the opportunities, and that's what I intend to do here. There is a good squad, training here for the last week - the tempo's really good, it's got everything needed to get out of this league and get out of the division.

"At the minute, the deal is what the deal is - with the Fair Play ruling at the minute you have a budget, the manager's done his budget for the time being so I've basically come here playing for free - I needed to get back in amongst it - I'm not coming here to be in the shop window, I want to earn a contract here."

The Chesterfield Post also spoke to Tendayi Darikwa, the player who's goal helped Chesterfield seal the best start to a league campaign in it's history and he told us that it was a proud moment in his career here but, unassuming as ever, that the main thing was the win for the teamThe Chesterfield Post also spoke to Tendayi Darikwa, (left), the player who's goal helped Chesterfield seal the best start to a league campaign in it's history and he told us that it was a proud moment in his career here but, unassuming as ever, that the main thing was the win for the team...
"After the game, someone mentioned it - it was good to get in the club's history but the main thing was to get the three points."

Clearly loving his time at the club and grateful for the opportunities that it has given him, the quietly spoken and respectful Tendayi said that though last season was an important one for him personally, this season is one he has high hopes for...
"Last season was my break through season and it was good to get the awards I did but disappointing not to get the promotion - and that's the main thing - the team."

He is soaking up the advice and support he gets from the dressing room around him too...
"Last season I was working with Jack Lester and that was good - and the new signings this year have made a big impact in the dressing room. They're all experienced pros who have played at a higher level."

Tendayi was the subject of interest from Premiership clubs during the end of last season and he admits that it hasn't gone to his head or changed his focus...
"It's always nice to be linked with the top clubs, but nothing happened - it's end of story, gone - and my main focus now is to try to put in the performances for Chesterfield. That's what I want to do and that's my main focus right now - I'm contracted here and my aim is to get us promoted.

"My injury came at a bad time - but that's football - and you have to take it as it comes. Thankfully we got it sorted out and I managed to make the last few games of the season and I'm raring to go now!"
