Chesterfield FC's Gary Roberts has been named the Sky Bet League Two Player of the Year at The Football League Awards 2014.
Roberts received the award (above), at the gala ceremony at The Brewery, London, last night (Sunday 16th March), in front of over 600 guests from clubs, sponsors and the football industry.
This year, a total of 36 clubs were shortlisted for 17 awards and Roberts beat competition from Rochdale's Scott Hogan and Scunthorpe United's Sam Winnall to claim the overall SkyBet League Two Player of the Year Award.
Roberts joined Chesterfield in the summer of 2013 from Swindon Town and he has been an inspirational figure in the Spireites' bid to win promotion from SkyBet League Two.
Turning 30 two days after The Awards, Roberts has packed plenty of experience into his career, all of which is proving vital for Paul Cook's men. As well as scoring some crucial goals, the winger also leads the SkyBet League Two assists table and his know-how has guided Chesterfield to not just the top of the table, but also a place at Wembley in the final of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
On winning the award, Roberts said, "Obviously promotion with Chesterfield is the main aim this season, but it's always nice to be recognised for the work that you are doing on the pitch.
"For me, it's been one of the best years of my footballing career. I love playing for Chesterfield and I'm really enjoying my football.
"Being at the top of League Two can be a bit nervy, because everyone is trying to hunt you down and knock you off your perch, but we got a good win over Oxford United on Saturday to keep us in first and I scored two goals, so adding in this award, it's probably been one of the best weekends of my life!"
The SkyBet Player of the Year awards have been voted for by managers of the clubs in each division. Each manager was asked to list their top five players from this season in order, with the scores added up to get a shortlist and an overall winner.
Shaun Harvey, Chief Executive of The Football League, said, "The Football League Awards 2014 has given us the opportunity to reward outstanding achievement, both on and off the pitch, by Football League clubs.
"Every one of tonight's winners is a worthy recipient of their award and all the other nominees have helped set an exceptional standard this year.
"It has been a tremendous celebration of life in The Football League."
The Awards were streamed live on The Football League's official YouTube and Facebook pages, as well as official club websites and YouTube channels, for the first time ever.
