Staveley MWFC On Record Sequence

Monday 17th January 2011

Staveley MWFC's 2-1 victory against Grimsby Borough brought the club's best ever sequence of results with 20 wins, 3 draws and just 1 defeat in the 24 game run.

Manager Billy Fox
has assembled a strong squad where the team spirit and togetherness is producing resilience and a belief that dragged Staveley MWFC through 90 minutes of difficulty at Grimsby Borough.

An expectant crowd of nearly 150 watching Grimsby Borough's first day time league game at their new £2m stadium were in expectant mood but after just 55 seconds Staveley MWFC had dampened their enthusiasm when Ryan Damms scored in the box after a Kyle Fores Chambers ball over the top found the Staveley striker in excellent form to dispatch his 23rd goal of the season.

Grimsby was clearly rocked and Staveley threatened to put the game out of sight with numerous attacks.

Chris Coy's audacious effort from 30 yards used the weather conditions to great effect, but his shot rattled the woodwork with the keeper well beaten. Next to rattle the woodwork was Jamie Smith cutting in from the right but his shot hit the post and the ball went out for a goal kick.

Grimsby, trying to play slow and progressive football, was finding the going tough but did have a chance to equalise after half an hour; the Grimsby striker though put his effort wide.

Staveley were pushing on, but a series of offsides caused frustration for the strikers and it looked like after dominating the first 45 minutes a single goal advantage was all to show. On 45 minutes Ryan Damms was fouled 22 yards out. With a simple but clinical free kick, Aymen Tahar scored for his 13th goal of the season in just 4 and half months playing for Staveley MWFC, an excellent return from the midfielder.

With the wind behind them in the second half, Grimsby had a chance to try and get back into the game but Staveley defneded stoutly.

Using a sensible approach to defending set pieces and trying to be patient, Staveley were getting through the second half holding possession and running down the clock wherever possible.

Grimsby got a lifeline on 65 minutes, Nathan Emson cutting in from the left and scoring from 15 yards out.

The push for the second goal never materialised for Grimsby though and it looked like Staveley MWFC could push on and get the 3rd goal.

Richard Patterson's contribution must be mentioned as his 90 minutes toil enabled the players around him to do their bit. It was a tremendous performance under really difficult conditions.

Next up is Leeds Met Carnegie who no doubt will be desperate to beat Staveley MWFC for the 3rd time of asking this season.

A defeat for Leeds and a win for Staveley MWFC would put a 15-point gap between Staveley and Leeds and also an 11-point gap on the teams in 3rd and 4th position.
