ROC Cafe Helps Young People Off The Streets

Thursday 30th October 2014
by Adam Morris

A local drop-in centre, at Grace Chapel, has recently been made a ROC Cafe for the work it does within the community.

ROC (Redeeming Our Communities) is a national organisation that spearheads help and aid within local communities all over the country.

ROC (Redeeming Our Communities)
is a national organisation that spearheads help and aid within local communities all over the country. The ROC Cafe is an aspect of this and its purpose is to help struggling young people cope with addiction and abuse, as well as provide a safe environment for counsel.

Set up by Deborah Green in Manchester, the initiative quickly gained momentum for the way it knitted communities together. It would achieve this by creating partnerships with the local police force, the council and the social services in order to tackle social problems more effectively.

ROC Cafe'sstreak of success in the past, they have been known to reduce anti-social behaviour in some areas by as much as 90%. Since then, both rural and urbanites now welcome the project's input with open arms.

Project manager, Simon Robinson, is currently at the helm of the local project. Though it had been a ROC Cafe for a few months, it had acted as a drop-in centre for about a year and was estimated to help as many as 30 young people week by week.

"It's all about partnership," Simon often added. "There has always been a strong link with the police."

He stressed that the point of ROC Cafe was to provide a safe place where issues and concerns can be talked about openly, but in confidence. Street pastors and PCSOs would also be available on-site for support if it was needed and they have been praised for their committed and optimistic attitude.

He added that, "The ethos is Christian, but it's for people with faith or no faith, more about good will and being driven by the need."

The ROC cafe is open on Fridays from 7:30-9pm at the Grace Chapel on Markham Road, across from the retail park. Funding is provided by Church in the Peak, as well as donations from other organisations. The team are currently in the process of acquiring additional funding as well, "Part of it is just taking the bull by the horns" Simon commented.

With bigger aspirations on the horizon, the ex-minister talked about the idea of beginning other initiatives such as a football club for the young people as well as branching out with a ROC Centre for the elderly.
