Fire Kills...

Friday 28th January 2011

After four young children lost their lives in a tragic house fire in Derbyshire earlier this week, the Derbyshire Fire Service has issued safety advice to residents in the area.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service Area Manager Gavin Tomlinson said: "We believe this tragedy was the result of a spark or ember falling from an open fireplace in the lounge. Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family at this time.

"This incident demonstrates how easily a fire in the home can devastate lives. We would urge all home owners to carefully consider basic home fire safety measures as follows:

  • Fit a smoke alarm on each level of your home and test it regularly

  • Take care when cooking

  • Plan an escape route and make a bedtime check

  • Don't overload sockets

  • Cigarettes - put them out, right out

  • Use candles carefully

  • If you have an open fire, ensure a suitable fireguard is fitted to prevent fuel and embers from falling out
."
