Hospital Fire Statement

Sunday 26th June 2011 - 01:15

Further statement issued at 01:00 -

"Fire Brigade report that the fire is out. Crew undertaking a search to check for any remaining hot spots. Considerable smoke and fire damage, particularly to A&E patient reception and the fracture clinic, as the fire had spread in to roof space above these areas.

A&E remains closed until further notice.  999 patients transferred to other available hospitals in the area.

Stress that NO WARDS have been evacuated as part of this incident - this has been reported via Facebook and is incorrect.  Please reassure relatives that their loved ones remain safe and secure on wards throughout the hospital. "

Further Statement issued 00:50 -

"The fire is now out and damage is currently being assessed. There's much damage to A&E and the Fracture Clinic. The hospital is currently looking into logistics of where to put A&E and so is closed for the foreseeable future.

Wards have NOT been evacuated."

This is the statement issued by Chesterfield Royal Hospital at 23.36 pm tonight:

"Fire crews are continuing to fight a severe fire based at Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in Calow, Chesterfield, Derbyshire.  Around ten engines and crews are in attendance.

The fire - which is thought to have started in a main entrance shop - triggered alarms at around 9.30pm this evening (June 25th 2011). The hospital has closed it's Emergency Department (A&E) (which is next to the main entrance) and the East Midlands Ambulance Service is transferring 999 patients to other hospitals."

Head of Communications Sarah Turner-Saint said, "We are asking people NOT to attend A&E until further notice.  We are taking advice from the fire service, but at the present time it is not safe to take emergency patients. We have no plans to evacuate wards at this time."

Further information will be issued.
