Quarter Of A Million Chances For Small Charities

Thursday 9th June 2011

A new initiative launches later this month that will give Communities the chance to celebrate the work of small charities and share in £250,000.

The Community Action Grant is an opportunity for voluntary groups to get money designed to help them build strong and flourishing communities.

A launch event on Tuesday June 21st will give people the chance to learn about the Community Action Grant as well as meet other likeminded community groups and organisations.

Derbyshire County Council Leader Councillor Andrew Lewer and Councillor Carol Hart, Cabinet Member for Public Health, are hosting the event which will feature examples of activities and actions by small groups - showing how a little support can go a long way.

The launch is also a chance for voluntary and community groups to celebrate Small Charities Week 2011 that runs from June 20th to June 24th.

Cllr Lewer said: "We know that there are plenty of groups out there doing wonderful things for their community and we would like them to come along and find out how we can support them.

"Community Action Grants will provide a welcome funding boost to help small projects get off the ground and can go towards a variety of things from equipment and training to transport.

"We are keen to show what can be achieved when people work together for the good of their communities." He added: "Large charities do fine work across the county and have the staff and resources to publicise their work.

"Much of the work of small charities can be far less visible but their achievements are just as significant. By bringing them together on June 21st, the county council hopes to provide the sector with a louder collective voice."

The event will highlight other funding support available such as Green Watch Action Grants and also sees the launch of the 2011 Excellence in the Community Awards which recognise outstanding work and extraordinary achievement by individuals, groups and communities.

The launch event is on Tuesday June 21st from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at County Hall, Matlock. Places are limited, so book early to avoid disappointment. Refreshments will be provided.

If you would like to attend please email ruth.chadbourne@derbyshire.gov.uk The closing date for responses is Monday June 13th.
