Breathe Deeply!

Wednesday 13th April 2011

A comprehensive study carried out to assess air pollution in Chesterfield has found that no locations within Chesterfield Borough have levels of pollution exceeding the safety limit values set by the European Union.

You can breathe deeply in Chesterfield

In March, the Council's Cabinet considered a report on the assessment of air quality using all the data from 2009, modelling it using the latest weather and traffic data as well as monitoring data from the 38 monitoring locations to determine whether anywhere exceeded the national limits. Nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter were assessed as these can increase in areas where there is slow or dense traffic.

The work was carried out during 2010 and included a specific assessment of pollution at both Whittington Hill and Compton Street as Initial data from 2009 had suggested that these locations could breach national limits.

A previous study in 2007 that concluded that an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) was needed along the principal roads throughout the Borough. The statutory consultation was carried out in late 2008. Whilst there was support for the AQMA, further assessment of the proposed area was required and this was included in the 2010 study.

In light of these findings, the Council has decided it should not proceed with the declaration of the AQMA for Chesterfield. However, the Council remains committed to monitoring the air pollution in the Borough and meeting its duties in relation to air quality management.

Some roadside locations are close to the action levels but are of no concern as there are no homes in these areas.

Russell Sinclair, Service Manager for Environmental Protection, adds: "We must now prepare the annual progress report which looks at data from 2010 and any changes in the Borough that may affect air quality such as the new Football Ground. We have also sited an additional monitoring station at Derby Road for three months to monitor roadside air pollution."

Data from the two automatic monitoring stations at Queens Park Annexe and Chatsworth Road is available on DEFRA's website: uk-air.defra.gov.uk
