Councils Test Local Taxi Firms

Wednesday 12th January 2011

After receiving complaints from Hackney Carriage drivers in Chesterfield that some Private Hire drivers were breaking the law by plying for hire, Chesterfield Borough Council has conducted an undercover operation to try and catch offenders.

41 Private Hire drivers were approached by undercover licensing enforcement officers. Only one broke the law and agreed to take the fare.

Cllr David Stone, Lead Member for Safe, Healthy and Active Communities said: "We have listened to the complaints made by the Hackney Carriage drivers and acted on these by carrying out this exercise, but the results show there is no evidence to suggest we have a problem with private hire vehicles plying for hire in Chesterfield."

"During the operation we also checked to see if Hackney Carriage drivers would accept short distance fares as this had been a complaint by other Hackney Carriage drivers that some drivers were refusing short distance fares. Of the four drivers we approached for short journeys all of them accepted the fares."
