Ahead of the local Elections, due to take place in May, North East Derbyshire District Council is encouraging local residents with an interest in becoming a local Councillor to find out more.
In total there's 53 seats up for grabs on the Council, but there are also 24 Parish and Town Councils in the District.
The Council has produced a guide, available online at www.ne-derbyshire.gov.uk/elections, which sets out the roles and responsibilities of local Councillors, as well as what's involved in standing for election.
People can also find out more about standing in the local elections at two drop-in sessions, being held on Saturday, 5th February from 10am to 11.30am and Wednesday 23rd February from 6pm to 7.30pm in the Council Chamber at Council House, Saltergate.
Cllr Graham Baxter MBE, Council Leader, said: "Councillors play a vital role in providing local leadership by representing local residents' views and making decisions about how the area is managed.
"Democracy depends on local people getting involved to help make a difference to the lives of North East Derbyshire residents, so we hope people will use this guide to consider how they could be part of this."
Voters go to the polls on 5 May to elect Councillors to NEDDC, as well as all parish and town councils in the district.
Anyone wanting to stand for election must be aged 18 or over on the day of nomination and a UK, Republic of Ireland, EU or Commonwealth citizen. They must also meet at least one of the following four criteria:
- Be registered to vote in North East Derbyshire
- Have occupied, as owner or tenant, any land or premises in North East Derbyshire
- Have had their main or only place of work in North East Derbyshire for the past 12 months
- Have lived in the district for the past 12 months
They will also need to be proposed and seconded by two electors, and have a further eight assent to the nomination.
Anyone wishing to attend either of the sessions should telephone the Governance Team on 01246 217753.
