Chesterfield MP Speaks Out Against the Spending Review

Thursday 21st October 2010

After yesterday's Spending review, we contacted Chesterfield's MP Toby Perkins to ask what he made of the Government announcement.

Toby Perkins MPHe told The Chesterfield Post: "Chesterfield is going to be badly affected b the cuts, probably more so than anywhere else in Derbyshire as we had a big Industrial past with lots of jobs in that sector.

"One of the things the town saw over the last few years was a lot of public sector jobs coming into the town. These opportunities will now decrease.

"There's an effect though on all jobs, a study by accountants Price Waterhouse Cooper revealed that for every job that's lost in the public sector, one goes in the private sector too. People here have real concerns that there will be jobs for them to do when they're sixty six, or even before.

"We now have a job to do to argue the case that the decisions that this Government has made will be dangerous for the economy, disastrous for our public services and damage our local businesses; I will be arguing that case for the people of Chesterfield in Parliament and the media.

"It's wrong to say it's the fault of the previous government - If we hadn't have taken the steps that we did from 2008 after the global credit crunch struck, we'd have seen another million people lose their jobs, and 40,000 people lose their homes.

"We'd have seen every single family in Chesterfield £275 a year worse off with the VAT that went in people's pockets. So we have to remember why we have a deficit - we have a deficit because we had the biggest global recession in seventy years and the government, the Labour government, had taken steps to protect people.

"We do need to make reductions in spending, we'd already agreed that, but the speed of the cuts they're making now are going to be really disastrous for local service and local businesses and we're going to be arguing really strongly that jobs are protected so we don't see another wasted generation."

Toby Perkins also spoke out against the cuts in his role on the shadow frontbench for Education. He said: "School children and parents have been sadly betrayed. The new money that was promised has disappeared into the mist, and all that's left is a re-direction of funds that looks set to send money from more deprived Councils to Shire and rural counties.

"The cuts to our next generation of school buildings are more drastic than even we dared fear, and the abolition of the Education Maintenance Allowance removes the last vestiges of fairness from a statement that will go down as the day this government's claim to fairness was exposed as a sham."
