County Council's Trading Standards Team Warning Over Computer Conmen

Monday 3rd December 2012

County Council's Trading Standards Team Warning Over Computer ConmenResidents are being warned to be on their guard following a rise in complaints about conmen posing as computer security engineers in an attempt to access people’s personal accounts.

Derbyshire County Council's
trading standards team has received a number of complaints from people saying they have been targeted by telephone cold callers claiming to be from "The World Wide Web Technical Department". The caller tells the victim their computer is at risk from a security threat and offers to carry out a free check.

Their aim is to get the victim to allow remote access to their computer - this gives them access to personal information held on the computer, including account log-in information and bank details, which can be used to commit fraud.

The scammers add authenticity by claiming to represent legitimate companies and use telephone directories to refer to their victims by name.

Councillor Kevin Parkinson, Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: This type of scam is regularly reported across the country but in the last week, we have seen a number of complaints from Derbyshire residents who have been targeted. They can also attempt to persuade the victim to give their debit and credit card details to pay for fixes which aren't necessary and they haven't done.

Councillor Kevin Parkinson, Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Regeneration, (left) said: "This type of scam is regularly reported across the country but in the last week, we have seen a number of complaints from Derbyshire residents who have been targeted.

"The callers can seem very plausible but residents should never give cold callers remote access to their computers or give out their debit or credit card details.

"With over 1,300 members - including 24 computer repair firms - our Trusted Trader scheme means there's absolutely no reason for anyone to need to deal with cold callers."

With over 1,300 members - including 24 computer repair firms - our Trusted Trader scheme means there's absolutely no reason for anyone to need to deal with cold callers. If anyone thinks they've fallen victim of the scammers, they should immediately contact their bank and consider getting their computer checked by a reputable engineer.

To report the incident they should contact Action Fraud on 0845 070 0707.

To help reduce the number of unsolicited calls consumers can register for the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) on 0845 070 0707.

Derbyshire County Council's Trusted Trader register can be found at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/tt or by calling 08456 058 058.
