Detectives are investigating a suspected arson attack after a firework was pushed through the letterbox of a house in Chesterfield.

At around 1am today (Thursday, November 1st) police were called to a house on St Augustine’s Avenue in Chesterfield after the homeowner was woken up by the smoke alarm sounding.

They went downstairs to find a firework on the floor that appeared to have been pushed through the letterbox and the kitchen filled with smoke.

Fortunately, no-one was injured in the incident.

Community Safety Inspector Russell Dakin said: "We are treating this incident seriously and would urge anyone with information about who is responsible to come forward.

"Whoever did this may have thought it was a prank but it could have had devastating consequences.

"Not only were they putting people's lives in danger but they could have caused serious damage to someone's home. Thankfully no one was injured and the house was fitted with a smoke alarm."

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Chesterfield CID on the police non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
