£120,000 Ambulance Service Investment In Life-Saving Machines

Wednesday 20th March 2013

Thousands of pounds have been invested by East Midlands Ambulance Service to purchase and install life-saving machines in the community to help save lives.

AEDs are used when someone has gone into cardiac arrest, i.e. when the heart stops pumping blood around the body.

Thousands of pounds have been invested by East Midlands Ambulance Service to purchase and install life-saving machines in the community to help save lives.
EMAS Community Defibrillation Officer, Pete Winson, with one of the new cabinets which houses the automated external defibrillators.

The defibrillator gives the heart an electric shock to allow effective cardiac rhythm to be re-established. The best conditions for defibrillation are present for only one to two minutes of someone going into cardiac arrest, with success rates decreasing from then at up to 20% per minute of delay.

Programme Lead Steve Bonser at East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) said: "Nationally, ambulance services are required to get to 75% of life-threatening emergencies within eight minutes of the call being picked up. However, when it comes to cardiac arrest, seconds count and the use of a defibrillator while our crews travel to the scene can save a life.

"We are investing £120,000 and installing 127 defibrillators in strategic places across the East Midlands where there is a high chance of cardiac arrest because of the number of people gathered or activity undertaken,
and where it is difficult for an ambulance to get to quickly because of poor road networks or traffic congestion.

"The defibrillators are stored in bright yellow cabinets which clearly state that the emergency equipment is available there. They are registered with our Emergency Operations Centre so when we receive a 999 call reporting a cardiac arrest we can tell the caller where the defibrillator is located.

"The life-saving machines can be used by anyone who witnesses an arrest as the machine gives clear instructions on what to do.

"We've had a great response from local businesses and organisations who have agreed to allow us to install the cabinets on their property. Venues include leisure centres, council buildings, post offices and local fire and police stations."

The service is also planning to increase the number of Community First Responder (CFR) groups by 10% every year for the next three years. CFRs are trained by EMAS and sent to 999 calls at the same time as the ambulances and as they are based in their communities, they can begin essential treatment such as CPR until EMAS' clinicians arrive. See www.emas.nhs.uk/get-involved/cfr/ for details.

In addition to the AED investment, EMAS is providing free Emergency Life Saving Skills courses to its local community, enabling people to know what to do in an emergency such as cardiac arrest, choking and severe bleeding.

Information on future dates and venues including Northamptonshire, and details on how to book a place can be found on the EMAS website at www.emas.nhs.uk/get-involved/upcoming-events/
