DLR Air Ambulance Attends RTA And Picks Up 69 Year Old Fall Victim

Monday 11th October 2013

DLR Air Ambulance Attends RTA And Picks Up 69 Year Old Fall VictimOn Saturday morning (9th November) a 27-year old female was airlifted by Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance (DLRAA) to hospital following a road traffic collision in Baslow, Derbyshire.

Her vehicle was spotted in a ditch next to a river bed by a passing lorry driver.

Due to the awkward location of the incident, DLRAA were called out to the incident. They left their base at East Midlands Airport at 07:47 and arrived at the scene of the incident at 08:10. The patient was extricated from the vehicle by the local fire and rescue service.

She was initially said to be alert but then started drifting in and out of consciousness. She was treated on the scene for potential pelvic and head injuries before being flown to Northern General Hospital in Sheffield for further treatment. Her current condition is unknown.

Later on in the afternoon on Saturday (9th November), DLRAA were then called out after a 69-year old male fell down a flight of stairs at his home in Killamarsh, Derbyshire.

DLRAA received the call at 13:33 and landed at the incident at 13:55. They were most suited to deal with the patient given the clinical nature of his injuries.

The crew worked alongside the local ambulance services to help extricate the patient due to the tight space at the bottom of the stairs.

The patient had sustained head and back injuries in the fall and was complaining of nausea and back pain on arrival of the crew. He was carefully immobilised and given anti-sickness and pain relieving medication.

The patient found even the smallest movements extremely painful and was therefore airlifted to Northern General Hospital in Sheffield for further treatment. The crew landed at the hospital at 15:06.

The patient's current condition is alsounknown.

DLRAA receives no Government funding, relying entirely on public donations. They believe their patients should be able to reach specialist treatment no matter where their incident happens. The sooner they reach the most relevant hospital for their injuries the greater their chance of survival and recovery.
