Tuesday 14th February 2012
The Spireites are back on the road tonight, this time at Gigg Lane where they will take on The Shakers.
Bury were promoted with Chesterfield last season and are currently in 11th place in League One, just 7 points outside the playoffs.
Chesterfield are looking to get back on the pitch after last weekend's clash with table toppers Charlton was postponed due to a severe frost on the b2net pitch.
The game against Bury was in doubt but the club are reporting that conditions have improved to the point that there is no need even for a pitch inspection.
So, the game goes ahead at 7.45pm tonight and we spoke with Assistant Manager Tommy Wright ahead of training to find out his thoughts about the match ahead.
Must have been frustrating having the game called off Saturday?
"It really was - on Friday, it looked like it could go ahead but, we did have it in the backs of our minds with the weather forecast that it could be in danger because it was forecast very cold on Friday and it was very cold on Friday! It wasn't a shock at the end of the day and we did prepare properly but, we have to get on with it now."
How's training been going given the weather?
"Obviously it's been difficult because we've been training on astro-turf and it's difficult, it's a good substitute, but you'd rather train on grass, so it's a bit stop and start really, also the players with knee problems can't train on astro turf, so it makes it difficult, but hopefully, we can train on grass this morning and get ready for Bury."
Onto Bury, a team you know well from last season?
"First and foremost, you have to say Ritchie Barker and Peter Shirtliff have done a fantastic job because they lost a lot of players, there's no doubt they lost a strike force - very important in League 2 - and I think would have been in this league, Lowe, Bennett and Nicky Ajose who's now at our place. They were a handful and Ritchie's got them in mid-table with 38 points (I think), so all credit to them, fantastic job he's done!"
And on Bury - what are you expecting from them?
"A
tough game! They'll play a 4-3-3 and they get at teams, we watched them at Charlton last week where they got a very creditable draw and could have won the game - they got a late equaliser. It'll be a tough game, whoever you play - Charlton, Sheffield Wednesday Yeovil, you have to show them some respect or else you'll lose. But, we're confident we can go there and win the game."
Three points from safety, there's still everything to play for isn't there?
"It's been a good month, apart from Carlisle which was very frustrating, but, it's been a good month and we're back in touch. I know we're bottom, but we're within touching distance and that was our plan, and there's 15/16 games left, so there's a lot to play for and a lot of points. There'll be ups and downs, but our aim must be just to survive in this league."
Any injuries?
"Mark Allott has a slight hamstring strain, it's touch and go, he's going to do a bit of training but whether he's ready for the game will be a different matter but, he's improving and if not Tuesday then definitely Saturday.
"Jimmy (Juan), we've had a bit of trouble with Jimmy, this kick on his calf. We've got the all clear now, we've kind of got to the root of the problem - it was a massive kick on his calf muscle and there was bleeding inside and it was giving him a bit of discomfort in the nerve, feeling in the bottom of his leg but it's been sorted and hopefully we can progress now."
