Wednesday 15th February 2012
"The whole Northern half of the country will be behind us on the day" said one fan as this morning saw West Stand season ticket holders flock to the b2met to collect tickets for the Wembley JPT final on March 25th.
So far, demand has been high. Yesterday Kop supporters were given the chance to pick up their tickets and the club is reporting this morning that yesterday, at close of business, 6,000 tickets had been sold.
After much deliberation, the club took the decision to stagger the sale in order to make the system fair and CEO Chris Turner spoke to the Chesterfield Post last week about the system they were planning, reassuring everyone that there would be enough tickets for everyone, at all prices. An initial amount of 21,000 tickets could swell by a further 15,000 if there is demand.
With the final currently the talk of the town, we popped along to the b2net this morning to ask West Stand ticket holders how much the trip to Wembley meant to die hard Spireites, and what their hopes were for the game.
Despite concerns that people would not get their tickets of choice, those purchasing tickets this morning told us the process was organised and simple and easier than they had thought.
Bill Ashmore from Hady has been a Spireite for 56 years and, after collecting tickets for himself and his wife this morning told The Chesterfield Post that it was a proud moment for him as a supporter, "I've been before, twice, when they played in the play off finals. It's an occasion and I'm hoping they win. It's a different occasion. It'll be a change from how they play here. I think they'll do it!"
Julie Hollis is from New Whittington and she says they've done the town proud, "It's fantastic, one of those things we may not experience again, so we've got to go for it. It's good for the town. I have children, that's why I'm here, it's such a boost for the fans like my son, they've turned up all season, rain or shine. We’re not doing so well this season and to get this is just fantastic for them. Definitely hoping for a win now!"
Julian from Newbold (pictured left with his ticket), is thrilled that the boys have made It through to the final, "It's brilliant, after the mediocre season, it's a bit of good news, for the supporters and the club and, hopefully a bit of money in the coffers I hope. I've been a supporter since I was a boy, so about 30 years. It's my second trip to Wembley - first was for the play offs and then for the JPT, so it's great."
We asked him to explain as a fan how it felt to be going to Wembley, "It's the pinnacle of English football, the world renowned stadium - every supporter wants to go there and every player wants to play there - it's a big day. It definitely gets Chesterfield on the map. I think back to the semi final and how the country got behind the club and hopefully the Northern half of the country will get behind us on the day!"
His prediction for the game? "There's a lot to think about, I think Swindon are going great guns and there's the ex Sheffield Wednesday connection of Di Canio and Sheridan - I'd like to think League One quality may just shine through!"
Finally, we spoke with Donna Slater from Eckington who was collecting tickets with her son, Max Chapman, who's 12 and is really excited. He told us, "It's not going to happen again any time soon! I'm really looking forward to seeing it, I've not seen anything like it before. It'll be big and nothing like the b2net.
Mum Donna agreed, "We've not had a very good season, so we'e all got something to look forward to now. Family members who aren't really into football are coming along too so it's a great family day out as well. I don't think we'll get relegated but this is a good morale boost for the players, supporters and the club. We're going to get our blue face paint and wigs ready and go down on the bus. It's something to remember when we're old!"
Donna has only supported the Spireites for the last couple of years - after she visited with her dad - and has turned up every week since. Given that, during that time, Chesterfield have been promoted and got to Wembley - is she a lucky charm? "I don't know, the couple I missed recently they won, so my dad says I'm an omen. We went to Oldham and they won, that was brilliant, the atmosphere was lovely. There's such camaraderie in the town.
"Football is such a good thing to talk about, we went on holiday and Max was wearing his shirt and we got chatting to a Burton fan. My husband doesn't like football though, so Max is stuck with bringing me when he's old enough. He's not going to get rid of me!"
