"A Big Result For The Club" - Spireites' Assistant Manager, Tommy Wright

Friday 24th February 2012

Another week, another derby... this time against Notts County at Meadow Lane.

The Spireites will be hoping to replicate last week's 3 point snatch from Sheffield Wednesday at the b2net. The teams know each other well, having met before twice this season - and are even, with both matches ending in a 3-1 score.

Notts County are currently 10th in the table and have had a torrid week after Manager Martin Allen left the club after last Saturday's lost game at Hartlepool. By Monday, Keith Curle and his team, Colin West and Colin Lee had replaced him on the touchline, and a midweek game against Stevenage ended in a 1-0 win, courtesy of a last minute goal by Jeff Hughes.

Having only lost 1 in 8, and still buzzing after their win against the Owls, the Spireites will no doubt be hoping to spoil the Magpie's management team's first Saturday in charge. They remain currently still in the drop zone - and just 4 points from safety, but are hopeful the resurgence in form will see them climb out of danger soon.

There are injuries for the Spireites though, after Gregor Robertson picked up a hamstring injury during the Owl's game. There are also other injures reported, as yet undetermined.

Assistant Manager Tommy Wright (left) talked to us ahead of training today and told us how pleased they'd been with the win, and the feeling ahead of the derby game tomorrow. Tommy also gave us an injury update.

So, you're one of the men responsible for 4 thousand odd hangovers on Sunday morning...

"Yes, it was a big result for everyone at the club, especially after the first twenty minutes when Sheffield Wednesday were really strong and dominant - and to keep a clean sheet was a big plus for us and gave everyone a boost - they're our rivals up the road and a massive club, so it was a timely boost!"

And Dean Morgan's penalty was a good one...
"Nicky (Ajose) did well - faced the lad up, did his little bit of shimmying and it was a definite penalty. People have asked me, were you worried about Dean taking the penalty, but I think we were confident he'd score - he's a confident lad and he's technically very good, but anyone can miss penalties. We were confident he could put it in the back of the net - and he certainly did that!"

John revealed to the press after the game that he didn't watch penalties - did you?
"I always watch, I didn't know John didn't watch, but every one to their own really."

Dean's had a good week, scoring twice at the reserve game - he's on fire isn't he?
"He is and this is the thing with Dean, he's a talented individual, he's got a lot of good attributes - the thing we say to him most is to use those attributes consistently - and that's been his problem for a longtime. But there's no doubt that he's got a lot of technique, a lot of ability that he should be doing better with and that's what we keep telling him. When he's on his game though, there's no doubt he's a very good player."

One downside during the game was Gregor Robertson's injury - how is he now?
"We'll he's pulled his hamstring and will be two or three weeks, which is disappointing for Gregor, given the setbacks he's had over the last few years, but he'll work hard and I'm sure he will be back soon."

How are others doing - Mark Crossley said after the reserve game that Mark Randall was poorly?
"Yes, Mark's had a throat infection, but he played half an hour for the reserves, he's OK. Jimmy Juan played half an hour, he came through that OK and has to build his fitness up now, but he's on the right road. Westy (Craig Westcarr) played the other day - he's trained for 10 days and he looks sharper every day, that's a plus, especially yesterday, that's the sharpest he's looked for a while, so he's progressing well."

I've seen Craig Clay coming in - his loan is up with Alfreton next week isn't it? How's he doing there?
"He's done well. He's played some games, been subbed some games and scored a goal. I think he's done well. We watched him a couple of times and the reports we've had are that he's done OK. Same with Tendayi (Darikwa), he's done alright at Hinckley, he did well. It's a plus for them to go and play proper football where points matter. Reserve games are OK, but they're not the main thing when you have to play for a focus at the end of the day."

And Aaron Downes is around this morning, is he back here for treatment?"He's had surgery, a cartilage operation on his knee, which went very well and I think he's progressed well, so for the first couple of weeks, he'll be at Chesterfield, then he's got to go back down to Bristol once he can pick up his rehab."

Notts County this week ... they say a week is a long time in politics, and they’ve had a torrid one. A bit of a surprise Martin Allen going?
"Yes, it was, but we always say in football that nothing surprises you! I went to watch then last week at Stevenage and it was a fairly even game, they changed one or two things but they did very well, Notts County, they scored a very late goal. But I saw parts of their game that we can do well against and at the end of the day, it's about the 11 players that cross that line - we've got a bit of confidence, we believe that what we're doing is right and hopefully we can get a good result there."

What do we know about the new management team? I understand that his assistant worked with Chris Turner at Hartlepool?
"He was - Chris knows him very well, Colin West, and obviously Colin Lee who was manager of Wolves. They're experienced, Keith (Curle) was Neil Warnock's assistant at QPR, so they're experienced and will do a fine job - just hopefully after Saturday!"

A new Manager, and a good win midweek against Stevenage - they'll be on a high?
"I think so, but they weren't like Real Madrid or Barcelona - they were good on the night, but if we play to our potential I think we can win the game."

What are you expecting from them?
"They did try to pass the ball and they had one or two players who played really well. Lee Hughes during the second half was excellent - a threat and probably man of the match though was Alan Judge - he was excellent, the best player on the park. He looked dangerous and had a free role and when he was on the ball he made things happen, so we'll have to keep an eye on him."

Any other injuries than the ones we've talked about?
"Everybody's got knocks and pulls and strains - everybody's fairly OK. There may be one or two that we can't really talk about and who may be touch and go for tomorrow, but hopefully everyone will be OK apart from Gregor."
