Just three games into the job and currently unbeaten Chesterfield gaffer Danny Wilson is taking nothing for granted as he faces high flying Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium this Saturday.
Asked about Gary Caldwell's side, Wilson (above) optioned, "They are a good side that will be challenging for the top two positions. The fans have a high expectations of bouncing back, but like all teams, they have weaknesses - and we will have to see if we can find a solution to go there and win the game. It's a big season for them this year, and it will be a tough game for us.
"It's a very big pitch and they like to play expansive football and they have some good players. We have to go out with confidence that the last three results have given us. They'll respect us and we have to have the belief that we can go there and win the game. Let's hope it can be as exciting as last week without the incidents!"
Last Saturday's clash at Spotland against Keith Hill's Rochdale was indeed eventful - a narrow win for Chesterfield was tempered by the sending off of Gboly Ariyibi (left), agreed Wilson, "It was a difficult place to go to. It was one of those games that had lots of goals and lots of controversy and it could have gone either way. Overall, the three points are massive! We've played some very good teams in the last few weeks and they for very different reasons, have been tough - that's where confidence comes from.
"We've been a threat, which has been great from my point of view. We have to maintain an attacking force and that's going to be what we're trying to achieve to the end of the season."
With Ariyibi forced to miss the next game, the gaffer told The Chesterfield Post, "He's been a real threat for us but we have other players at the club - and although the team has been fairly consistent in its personnel the last few weeks, there are one or two boys who are chomping at the bit and feel they deserve to play. Now the opportunity will appear in one or two cases to put their marker forward and let's see how they do!
"You need a squad! You don't get through the season with 11 players. We have that cover, players who can step in, they have a different dynamic and that's good for us. The squad that we will put together will be something that can change the game. We have a lot of strikers at the club and not so many in other positions so we have to try and address that if we can."
Injury-wise, "Evatt is still going to be out for a couple of weeks but apart from that we are all fine. Drew came through training and will be in the squad at the weekend. Chris Herd took a knock but we are just resting him up as a precaution."
With the transfer window still open, Wilson admitted that it was quiet on that front currently, adding, "Armand is back from Stevenage and there are a couple of clubs who would like to take him but that's down to Armand (left), and his agent, There's nothing else on anyone at this stage."
Asked if contract negotiations had entered his thought process for players who will see their contracts run out at the end of the season, Wilson highlighted his priorities, "I have not had any thoughts! The priority is to focus on the team and get into a safe area and then we can approach the contracts of the players. We are not in a position where we can put our feet up. Our target is 50 points and then we have can have a look at who's going to be here next season."
Wilson went on to confirm that Liam Graham is still training with the Spireites and clarified that, "It's clearance that we have problems with and he's not available to us. He's getting fitter every day though! Yiadom is still training with us - he'll have another few days with us and then we'll make a decision on him."
After securing back-to-back wins for the first time since October, Wilson was asked by Sean Taylor from Press Association what, if anything, he had changed. Wilson replied "There was something in the minds of the players that didn't allow them to play that way. I was always of the belief that some of these players were underachieving - and it was important to get them back to the level that I knew they could play at. I have given them the belief to bring that back to the fore again. We now look like a team that can score goals and that will get us out of the situation we are in."
