Burton Albion 1-0 Chesterfield
Pirelli Stadium, Friday 12th February 2016, 7:45pm
The Spireites went down bravely at table-toppers Burton Albion, losing to a single strike in first half added time.
It was tough justice on a Chesterfield side who had looked very solid at the back and threatened when going forward.
Burton showed little enterprise in the second period but the Spireites failed to capitalise. The inexperienced forward line worked hard but came up against a solid rearguard that knew what was needed to claim the win.
Overall lots of the ball and lots of pressure without seriously troubling a savvy side that did just what they had to do; if only the Spireites had a similar knack!
Danny Wilson's side returned to the Pirelli in a very different set of circumstances to their last visit when they clinched the League Two Championship in style. This season, it's the hosts that look set for silverware as they top the table with exactly double the points that have come Chesterfield's way.
The Spireites, with three straight defeats, know that a positive result is vital if they are to build a gap between themselves and the relegation berths.
Danny Wilson made two changes from the Peterborough starting line-up. Neither Sylvan Ebanks- Blake nor Lee Novak were fit enough to make the squad with Gboly Ariyibi and Rai Simons stepping straight in.
Rai Simons led the attack for the Spireites and looked comfortable on the ball in the early stages. The game's first effort of note saw Drew Talbot push forward on the left and try his luck; his effort flew narrowly wide of the right upright. Five minutes later his floated free kick flew wide of the same post.
Goby Ariyibi's pace down the right won the game's first corner. It came to nothing but the Spireites were not sitting back and continued to press strongly.
Mason Bennett, previously on loan at the Proact, produced Burton's first attempt on target; his scuffed effort was easily held by Lee.
A Burton free kick on the left found John Mousinho wide on the right; his neat set up for Stuart Beavon brought a fierce drive that was well blocked. Sadly Liam O'Neill was injured in the incident and replaced by Dan Gardner.
Tom Anderson cleared well from Mark Duffy to concede a corner and three more followed, without any serious danger, before Callum Butcher finally looped his edge-of-the-box effort over the bar.
Almost immediately, Sam Hird headed agonisingly wide of the left upright from a strong Jay O'Shea free kick.
The Spireites kept the pressure on as Dan Gardner twice went close and Gboly Ariyibi ran in from the right - but his effort was wayward.
Just as seven minutes added time was being announced the home side edged ahead. Callum Butcher fired home through a crowd of players to give the Brewers an undeserved lead. The goal brought Burton to life and they went close on a couple more occasions - but the Spireites will have considered themselves very unlucky to be behind at the interval.
HT: 1-0
The Spireites resumed kicking towards the Chesterfield supporters. Rai Simons was inches away from giving them something to cheer as his tight angled shot from the bye-line flew over.
Chris Herd received the game's first yellow card after referee Hooper decided what to many, looked a clean tackle, was 'over enthusiastic'. Moments later, Tom Anderson followed him into the book for a clear block.
Danny Wilson made his first change of choice on 55 minutes as Ollie Banks replaced Herd.
Ariyibi was a threat when the opportunity arose but needed better service; one whipped in cross from the right was happily put behind.
Stuart Beavon again went close as his goalbound effort took a deflection.
Rai Simons, who had worked tirelessly all night, made way for Mani Dieseruvwe who took up the central role.
Jay O'Shea then cut inside and fired weakly for John McLaughlin to claim easily.
Talbot was causing all sorts of problems on the right and one through ball for Dieseruvwe looked set to threaten, instead a harsh offside decision ended the danger. Nigel Clough made a double substitution with the aim of bringing some solidity - but the Spireites pushed forward.
Beavon threatened again on the left as his pacy ball in was cleared well. With three minutes remaining he forced Tommy Lee to palm clear as his powerful blast posed a threat.
The Spireites dominated the four minutes added time but failed to produce a telling final ball, as Burton happily saw out the time. It was three more big points for the home side and a battling but ultimately pointless performance from the Spireites.
What a big game in prospect at Colchester on Tuesday!
