"You never know what can happen in a game!" - that's Danny Wilson, Chesterfield Manager (below), as he spoke to The Chesterfield Post ahead of this weekend's game against Gillingham.
Admitting he was happy with the performance which saw the Spireites pick up a valuable 3-1 win against Crewe the gaffer said, "The performance will always come second at this stage in the season - after the three points - but it is a bonus when they come hand in hand. Crewe made a game of it, which made it a spectacle but the three points were paramount to us.
"Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Novak had a calmness in front of goal - that those two scored is a massive bonus. The young ones will have their moments between now and the end of the season. It was important to get some experience out there.
"It was always going to be a nervy game if there weren't any goals in it - but scoring so early didn't allow us to have any nerves."
Home grown talent Conor Dimaio (left), scored on his debut and Wilson was full of praise for the young player, likened to a young Danny Wilson by fans, "Conor is a quiet boy, he's very subdued but he was delighted with the goal in the dressing room afterwards. His performance was very strong and that added to his all round accolades."
Injury-wise, there is room for cautious optimism says Danny, "We are starting to get one or two players close to training. Raglan is still out but on the training ground - we're not sure of timescales. Dan Jones came on against Gateshead in the reserve game on Tuesday, though he came off again with a foot injury that was nothing to do with his ankle! He's getting closer. Chris Herd got a hip flexor problem - he won't be available this weekend but maybe in a week or two.
"O'Neill is training with us but we're still talking to doctors about whether he going to be available to us for the weekend. We're waiting to see what we get from them!"
Recent loan signing Declan John also drew praise from the boss after a strong performance on Saturday, but he assures fans there is more to come, "With Declan, we haven't seen anything like what he can play like. I'm quite excited about the performances coming up! Let's hope we can see him more in an attacking role rather than a defensive one."
And whilst Jordan Slew didn't feature in the Crewe match, he did excel in the reserve game against Gateshead midweek, notching up a number of goals in the 7-0 rout, "Four goals in any game is an achievement. Strikers have to score goals! His all round play was good, the attitude and application were great, they were very professional."
Gillingham are this week's opponents and, sitting in 3rd spot, they will not be an easy proposition says Wilson. "They've managed to get 58 points in their return so far, they'll be harbouring hopes that they can get in the top two but they'll certainly be in the play offs.
"At this stage in the season though, some top teams can get nervy and anxious and the form table can turn upside down. They have a strong record at home and anyone who goes there knows they're going for a very tough game - you never know what can happen in a game though!
"They are well organised, have players that can score goals in key areas and they have a big goalscorer in Dack - he's got a good return and is one of the boys that we have to be wary of. They are a team that works very hard for each other and that's what's got them in the position they're in!"
