You will recall that last Thursday, The Chesterfield Post brought you the story of Barnaby and Benji, two 7 week old Terrier cross pups, found in a field in old Tupton just over a week ago (below).
We have just heard from the RSPCA in Chesterfield that a woman claiming to be the owner of the pups has contacted them. She claimed that Barnaby and Benji were stolen from her property, leaving her with the pup's mum and other siblings.
Inspectors have paid a visit to the woman, who has requested no publicity, and, due to the likeness of the pups, were satisfied that they were in fact hers.
Benji and Barnaby have now been returned and are no longer up for re-homing at the kennels.
PREVIOUS STORY... Thursday 4th November 2010
RSPCA bosses are appealing for help in tracing the people who dumped Barnaby and Benji last week in a Chesterfield field.
A passer-by tending to her horse near the field at Ashover Road, Tupton saw the pups who were cold but otherwise unharmed.
Both male and around 7 weeks old, they appear to be Terrier cross breeds.
Pictured left with RSPCA handler Lindsay, Barnaby is a tan rough haired dog, with Benji smooth haired and black.
Inspectors are investigating how the dogs came to be in the field and, if the owners do not come forward by Saturday morning, the pups will be available for adoption from 11am.
Richard Woodward is Manager of the centre at Spital and he told The Chesterfield Post, "The pups were in good health, well fed and in good condition which is unusual in situations like this. Whatever the circumstances people don't need to abandon their animals - it is an offence - if you are unable to keep an animal, contact the RSPCA, we can possibly help."
if anyone has any info regarding the pups or with any other concern for animal welfare or support, please contact the RSPCA on 01246 273358 or visit Chesterfield RSPCA's website at www.chesterfield-rspca.org.uk
