The RSPCA is appealing for what it calls a 'special home for a very special pup'.
Mac (pictured above) is a 12 week old Rottweiler - one of a litter of 11 who, after being identified as the runt of the litter, has been hand reared since he was a couple of days old.
He has thrived, but due to the vigilance of his foster carer, Julie Millington, who bottle fed him every two hours at the beginning, it soon became apparent that he had problems with his vision.
Closer investigation by a Vet showed that Mac was in fact virtually blind and what little sight he did have would soon disappear. It's a genetic condition and sadly inoperable.
After 12 weeks with Guardian Angel, Julie, he is now a stocky bundle of fun and mischief and is ready to be re homed as a family pet.
Richard Woodward, manager of the centre at Spital says that despite Mac's blindness he is an alert and normal pup. Like humans, blind dogs compensate for their lack of eyesight with strengthened hearing and smell.
He added, "Mac has always been blind so doesn’t know any different - to be honest blind dogs cope better than people. He has an acute sense of hearing and is already finding his way around Julie's home. He's a real gentle giant, a fantastic family pet. He's brilliant with kids, and may be ok with other dogs".
The RSPCA know that Mac is brilliant with cats - he was fostered virtually from day 1 with Boyd, a tiny black kitten (also pictured above) who was found abandoned by a nurse when only a few hours old.
He too has been nursed and handreared by Julie at her home and is thriving too.
He and Mac have formed "a close bond that is wonderful to see", says Julie. "They think they're brothers - they sleep together, eat together and, though Boyd does go outside he won't go past the garden fence, preferring to stay close to Mac who follows him around the garden, relying on the little sounds the kitten makes to locate him".
They would, if possible like to rehome the two together in order not to break the bond and provide comfort and familiarity to Mac in his new home.
After more than 12 weeks with both of them Julie will be sad to see them go but says, "Mac needs an owner that is firm, because he's strong, but he's fabulous with kids and cats. I have no qualms about him going with kids, he loves to be with people.
"I'm crying buckets already at the thought of him going - but I know if someone could give him a lovely home then I've done my job and I can then go on to foster more".
Anyone who thinks they can home Mac and Boyd should please call Richard Woodwards on 01246 273358.
