A Primary School in Chesterfield has helped to spread a little Christmas joy after a tree they decorated took pride of place at Ashgate Hospice.
The Children from Walton and Holymoorside Primary decorated a Christmas tree in store at the new B&Q on Spirewalk in Chesterfield as an activity during their 'Communities Week' where various schools dressed trees and customers voted for the best dressed.
The children (above) presented the winning tree to Ashgate Hospice, where it will form a centrepiece for patients and visitors over the festive period.
Ashgate Hospice is the chosen Charity of B&Q this year and Neil Bennett who is charity co ordinator says the store is very proud of it's association with the charity. "It's all about supporting local communities. It's a special charity this, everyone has been touched by cancer, we all know friends and families touched by this. The work they do here is fantastic and the work they do with the Royal Hospital is fabulous - they provide nurses there too.
"My brother in law was in here and the work they do is just brilliant. The staff all buy into it and have lots of fun too along the way, and we get to make money for a good charity".
Talking about the communities week he added, "It was a good week, we had lots of stalls. A member of staff here today made loads of cakes to sell, people donated loads of bric a brac and the whole week and it's events cumulated in us raising £650 pounds for the Hospice.
"One activity was the tree decorating which was very popular, and today the children who decorated the winning tree are going to present it to the Hospice and we will hand over the money".
Emily Evans is fundraiser for the Hospice and she feels the partnership between the Charity and the store is a good one saying, "It's about raising money but also raising awareness".
Neil says there are other events planned throughout the year - the next big one is a huge Concert at the Winding Wheel, which will feature tribute acts and local groups.
