Christmas is a time for giving and giving to those less fortunate than ourselves, and several pubs in Chesterfield have entered into the spirit of that this festive season.
It's been announced that The Rutland Arms, The Blue Stoops and The Woodside in Chesterfield join The Jolly Farmer in Dronfield and The Bridge in Sandiacre, in pledging their support for the Trussell Trust and getting involved with Christmas food collections.
The five pubs collectively hope to make a major contribution and to raise awareness for the charity.
The Pub People, who own and operate the five pubs, decided to support the Trussell Trust when it came to their attention that over 13 million people in the UK live below the poverty line.
Last year alone, foodbanks helped feed 346,992 people nationwide, 126,889 of which were children.
Andrew Crawford, Operations Director says, "Many of our pubs are community based and raise significant sums for local charities. We were shocked that so many people have to make use of food banks and felt obligated to help, through our customers, licensees and pubs."
They began a campaign encouraging their pubs all over the East Midlands to collect and donate food to the Trussell Trust in time for Christmas. Each pub has received a posters and advertising to help promote the food drive which explains to licensees and customers exactly what donations are needed.
Collections have already begun in most pubs and will continue throughout the next month, until the drop off date in mid December. Volunteers will then sort the food and pack it into boxes ready to be distributed. Each box provides 3 days of emergency food for people in need.
The Pub People company is committed to working with local communities and whenever possible uses local suppliers for drinks and food. For more information visit www.pubpeople.com
The Trussell Trust is a Christian organisation, that works to combat poverty and exclusion in the UK and Bulgaria. They partner with churches and communities to open new foodbanks nationwide.
With almost 400 foodbanks currently launched, the goal is for every town to have one. Their vision is to build communities where people of all backgrounds are included and have the opportunity to live in dignity with hope for the future. For more information visit www.trusselltrust.org
