A Day To Remember And Respect

The Mayor and Mayoress of Chesterfield joined forces with The Chief Executive of Chesterfield Borough Council, Huw Bowen, to pay tribute to those who suffered in the Holocaust by signing the Commemoration Book in the Town Hall, along with Leader of The Council, Cllr Ray Russell and Leader of the Opposition John Burrows who also joined them.

Anyone wishing to pay his or her respects by signing the book should visit the Town Hall main reception where the book will be open until February 4th.

Residents in North East Derbyshire can also sign one of four Commemorative Books that are at various sites in the area.

From today books will be in the reception at Council House, Saltergate, Dronfield Sports Centre, Sharley Park Leisure Centre and Eckington Swimming pool.

There will also be photographs and information about this year's event - which focuses on the untold stories of survivors - on display in Council House reception, Saltergate.

The memorial day is held every year to remember the victims - and all of those people whose lives have been changed beyond recognition - of the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

Cllr Graham Baxter MBE, Council Leader, said: "This day is an opportunity for communities across the world to come together and remember the countless victims of these atrocities.

"We hope people will take the chance to sign one of the commemoration books, which will be sent to organisers of the national event, the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust."
