The Mayoral Week...

Friday 11th February 2011

Last week was a relatively quiet one for the Mayor, as events pick back up after the Christmas period but, as ever, a productive one.

The Mayor and Mayoress attended the Parkside School GCSE presentation evening for students that had been due to take place in December but, like many things, had been cancelled due to the bad weather.

"It was", said the Mayor, "a lovely event, which wouldn't normally have been at this time of year, I was very proud of the students."

Brampton Church over 50's club had held an event for the Mayor's Appeal at which His Worship gave a talk about his duties and the origins of The Chain. They were then treated to afternoon tea.

One of the things the Mayor and Mayoress are most passionate about is sharing their role with the public. They are prolific hosts in the Parlour and keen to promote the history and the traditions of both the Town and the council.

Hasland Hall School were the latest visitors and held their School Council meeting in the Chamber.

The Mayor told The Chesterfield Post that he was impressed with how impressive and organised the students were, in fact, he told us, "I'm amazed at how good all the School Council kids that have come here have been - no matter which school, or where they have come from, one thing has stood out - the Chairs and Deputy Chairs have confidence and that's the one thing you just can't teach, it's a self assurance, a leadership quality. They are children who will flower and we need to try and make sure all children are like that."

The biggest event attended by the Mayoral couple was The Showman's Guild Lunch, "Which was", said the Mayor, "a brilliant event, organised by the Showmen who run fairgrounds. They are very proud of what they do."

With Mayors from many districts in attendance and the Showmen themselves the proud owners of chains, there was, laughed the Mayoress, "Plenty of bling".

In fact the Mayor recalled there was a bit of "Chain envy going on!", with the Sheriff of Lincoln admiring the Chesterfield Mayoral Chain.

The Mayoral couple would like to thank the Showmen for their generosity and kindness at the event which was a  'thank you' to all the towns that host fairs through the year.
