So... Who Is The New Mayor Of Chesterfield?

Wednesday 18th May 2011

Peter Barr was born in Chesterfield in 1940 and as a young boy spent many hours watching the craftsmen working in his Grandfather's coach building business, Metcalf's on Saltergate. This influenced his interest in engineering and making a hobby of car maintenance.

Peter completed a Certificate in Engineering at Chesterfield 'Tech' whilst on day release from his employer, James Neill.  He held various positions in the magnet department of the company, from shop floor supervisor to production planning and costing.

He has always had an interest in politics and has been a member of the Newbold and Brockwell Forum since it started, which he currently chairs.

He took early retirement and in 2003 was elected to Council for the Linacre Ward. He also represents the Council on several bodies of community work.

Married to Jean for 30 years, they have two sons, Christopher, aged 26, and Robin, aged 21. Jean, also from Chesterfield and now retired, has held a number of lecturing posts in North Derbyshire and Sheffield.  Jean's great, great grandmother once lived in Revolution House in Old Whittington.

Peter is a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology, Institute of Advanced Motorists and recently passed his ECDL.

The couple both enjoy gardening, working in the community and caravanning around Britain.
