Town Pays It's Respects To Former Mayor

Friday 10th June 2011

Over a hundred councillors and council employees lined the steps of the Town Hall today to pay their respects to former Mayor of the town Cllr Nicky Qazi who died after an illness, aged 81.

At 9.45am, his coffin and family cars passed through the town (above) in order that people could pay their respects to a man described as a 'true gentleman'.

Cllr Qazi was Mayor of Chesterfield In 2004 - having served as a Lib Dem Councillor since 1987.

He was active in local politics until the very end, and one of his last public appearances was at the election count at Queen’s Park on the 6th May.

A humanist service has taken place at the Crematorium with a private family burial to follow at Brimington Cemetery.
