Former Mayor Thanks Chesterfield For Kindness And Cash

Tuesday 16th August 2011

It was a busy year for The Mayoral Couple of 2010/11, Councillor Keith Morgan and his wife Pat as they undertook many duties to raise the profile of the town and it's people.

The Mayoral year is also about raising money for charity though and the Mayor and Mayoress recently declared themselves very proud to hand over cheques to their charities, Fairplay and The Samaritans totaling over £14,000.

After the ceremony Cllr Morgan and his wife spoke with us and told us how they had enjoyed the opportunity to help the charities last year. "It was hard work raising money because of the recession but a lot of fun too. All the events we did were different but what stood out for us what they way everyone pulled together, everybody pulled in, local businessmen, the Football club, the CASA and Matalan for the fashion show, so we're very grateful to all of them."

The Former mayor admits though that the year was not just about money, "What we are proudest of is raising the profile of the charities - being able to get out there and talk about them and introduce them to Chesterfield. It's also nice to have raised the profile in the town - one of the proudest comments I had was from the market traders who said it had been good to see so much of us. If we've been noticeable, then we've taken an interest in the town and that's good".

Expectations had been exceeded, they admitted as people generously attended and gave to events throughout the year, "We never set a target, we just thought if we hit 5 figures it would be nice, so to have exceeded that was brilliant. Every little helps as they say and we're grateful to everyone who made it possible, not just money but so much time and effort was given by people on our behalf.

"The people of Chesterfield have been so kind and generous - and we're very grateful."

Representatives of the two charities were grateful too and spoke to us about how much the money and profile meant to them moving forward.

Judy and Malcolm from the Samaritans are, "Very grateful for the support of the Mayor's appeal - we'd like to thank the Mayor. We're a self-funding charity and don't getting any money from the Government. We have 25,000 people from this area who call us every year so this money will be a big help to them."

Francesca from Fairplay was thrilled to have been involved and was hugely proud of the fundraising achieved, "It's fabulous that we were picked as the Mayor's Charity, it means a huge amount to Fairplay to have this money towards our garden which will mean a huge amount to children and young people with disabilities.

"It will be a huge asset to the people of Chesterfield. The money we raised was wonderful and I'd like to thank the people of Chesterfield for their generosity."
