The Mayoral week began with the Complimentary Dinner, a 'thank you' to all the councillors and council workers who've been part of the Mayoral year. Held in Committee Rooms 1 and 2, it was described by the Mayor as a "delightful engagement", with all councillors in attendance.
During his speech, The Mayor took the opportunity to congratulate his Secretary, Vivien (above left) on winning the 'National Civic Officer of the Year' award!
Saturday brought the swimming gala at Queen's Park. Although the Mayor and Mayoress enjoyed the swimming and wished to congratulate all the participants, they took particular delight in the praise that the organisers had for the facilities, described as the "best of all the pools they use - it's the only pool apart from Derby that offers 50m lengths along with poolside facilities for competitors which are separate from the audience, an excellent gallery and good changing facilities."
The Charity Fashion show, organised by Matalan, was a highlight of the week, raising between £750 - £1000 for the Mayoral charities. The Mayor and Mayoress were thrilled with the success of the evening and grateful to everyone who had helped and taken part.
Another event was the charity 'Cake Off' at CSC computers on Chatsworth Road. One of the biggest employers in the town, it employs 900 people. A charity day had been organised to raise funds for Fairplay (also their charity for the year) and Red Nose Day.
The Mayor and Mayoress were tasked with choosing the 'best looking cake' from many baked and then sold by staff. It was by all accounts a tough decision, the winner being a bouquet of roses made of cupcakes.
Grangewood Medical Centre was opened by the Duke of Devonshire and the Mayor and Mayoress were in attendance.
One of the most interesting visits for the couple came with a visit to The Assay Office in Sheffield.
"It was" reports the Mayor, "an interesting day - absolutely fascinating".
During the engagement the couple learned about the history of the office, watched gold being melted down and other gold being hallmarked. We are the only country to do this except for Switzerland, Portugal and Spain - but the most surprising fact for the Mayor was that the Assay office is a private company and not a government department.
Engagements for the week ahead include a visit to unveil the 'apple sculpture' at Tesco and two civic service engagements, one at Matlock and one at South Derbyshire.
