We Will Remember Them. Chesterfield's World War One Centenary EventsChesterfield residents can take part in a series of events at Chesterfield Museums to mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War.

The events, at the Chesterfield Borough Council operated venues, will explore different aspects of life during the First World War through the eyes of people who were there.

Councillor Amanda Serjeant, Chesterfield Borough Council's Executive Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism said: "The First World War marked a turning point in our history, which has now passed from living memory.

"These events run at Chesterfield Museum and Revolution House to mark the 100th anniversary of the conflict, will allow families to learn together what life was like for local people who experienced the conditions of war."

Events will take place at Chesterfield Museum (above) on:

  • Saturday 9 and 16 August -
    The Pomegranate Youth Theatre will be performing a series of readings from the First World War poets and letters from a Chesterfield soldier

  • Monday 11 August -
    First World War Medicine
    Discover about life as a VAD nurse and life in a field hospital

  • Thursday 14 August -
    "School Life and Period Games"

    Explore school life during the First World War, the lessons being
    taught and the games being played

  • Friday 15 August -
    "Come and meet The Tommy Teaches
    "
    A hands on look at the life of a First World War soldier.

There will also be an exhibition in the museum's video room from Monday 4th August called "Faces of the First World War". The exhibition reflects Chesterfield men who fought in the conflict.

Chesterfield Museum is open each Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 4pm and admission is free.

An additional event will take place at Revolution House, Old Whittington on Sunday 10th August -
"Meet a First World War Officer"
Find out about life in the trenches on the Western Front.

Revolution House is open each Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday from 11am to 4pm until Sunday 28th September and admission is free.

To mark the anniversary, the council have been working with local schools, including Barrow Hill Primary School and Inkersall Primary School to create poppy meadows, allowing children to learn about the First World War and why we wear poppies each November at Remembrance time.

Chesterfield's Mayor, Councillor Alexis Diouf and Mayoress, Vickey-Anne Diouf, will be representing the borough at church services to mark the centenary of the conflict.
