With perfect timing after yesterday's chaos, news that this week, Yorkshire Water and Chesterfield Borough Council have pledged to work together to tackle flooding in the town, including the long running issues at Horns Bridge roundabout

The pledge came following a meeting where council leader, Councillor John Burrows and Yorkshire Water's director of customer service and networks Dr Helen Phillips, met to discuss the company's work in the area.

Cllr Burrows and Dr Phillips were joined by Councillor Chris Ludlow, executive member for environment, Lib Dem Councillor Keith Morgan, council officers and staff from the council's strategic property partner Kier. They agreed to set up a cross organisation working group to show their determination to tackle flooding issues facing the town.

The pledge came following a meeting where council leader, Councillor John Burrows and Yorkshire Water's director of customer service and networks Dr Helen Phillips, met to discuss the company's work in the area.Dr Phillips said: "Yorkshire Water will be carrying out investigations in the area over the next few years to understand the causes of flooding at Horns Bridge and in the wider catchment.

"We are keen to work with Chesterfield Borough Council to combine the results of our study with the council's own planned drainage study to ensure that we come up with an effective solution."

Yorkshire Water's investigation work is expected to be completed in 2017 and the company hopes to secure investment for improvements in the area from 2020.

In the interim the company hopes to help alleviate some of the flooding issues by introducing new a maintenance schedule for screens on the sewer which will help to remove blockages.

The manhole cover on the roundabout has also been replaced with a specially fitted release lid. This will not prevent the flooding from occurring, but will allow the manhole to flood without the manhole cover being lifted out reducing the health and safety risk and the risk of damage to the public highway.

Councillor John Burrows said: While flooding issues are not a direct responsibility of the borough council, it is an issue we are acting on because we recognise the heartache and distress it causes to residents who are affected, as well as the economic impact it has on the town. Councillor John Burrows (left), said: "While flooding issues are not a direct responsibility of the borough council, it is an issue we are acting on because we recognise the heartache and distress it causes to residents who are affected, as well as the economic impact it has on the town.

"This is a regularly recurring problem which disrupts the town. We have to work collectively, sharing our knowledge, responsibilities and skills to determine a long term solution on behalf of our townsfolk.

"I wish we could rectify the problem quickly but the technical difficulties require time and patience to resolve them."

The meeting also discussed Yorkshire Water's recent investment in the region, which includes £20m of improvements to Old Whittington Waste Water Treatment Works.

The improvements to the works will help in improving the water quality in the River Rother and modernising equipment to enable the works to cope with predicted population growth in the area.

New sludge digesters, which dispose of sludge by breaking it down to generate bio-gas, have also been installed enabling the site to generate about 40 per cent of its own electricity demand.

The improvement to the treatment process will ensure also sludge movements are kept to a minimum reducing the risk of odours from the site.
